Leadership Learning Community

The Health Science Learning Community is home to students exploring careers in the health sciences.  Students typically share interests in fields such as biology, chemistry, pre-medicine, nursing, pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-dental, or health systems management.  Members of the Health Science LC engage in dialogue, programs, and trips related to the health professions and be supported through some of their more difficult classes by each other, their faculty, and by additional tutoring services provided to the Community.

Students in the Health Science LC have visited the International Museum of Surgical Science, explored the YOU! The Experience exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, and partipated in the AIDS walk/run.  Students learn from annual trips to Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine and the Illinois Medical School Admission Seminar.  They enjoy dinners and discussions with upper-class students who serve as mentors for the Community and have screened movies such as The English Surgeon.

Curricular Requirements

Typically, the Health Science Learning Community takes 2-3 classes together in the Fall semester and 1-2 classes together in the Spring semester.  For most students this is a quarter to a third of their total classes each semester.  This provides wonderful opportunities to connect through coursework with peers in the community but also ample opportunity to meet friends from outside the community.  Faculty members who teach in the Health Science LC also participate with students in activities and events outside the classroom, allowing students to develop stronger relationships with faculty members from their first day on campus.

All courses required for the Health Science LC meet requirements for all degree programs at Loyola.  Fall 2011 courses are confirmed while Spring 2012 classes are provided as examples:
