Dear Loyola graduates and friends,

This issue of Loyola magazine spotlights Loyola’s partnership with The Beijing Center, a thriving center for the study of China and its culture, and also looks at the men’s basketball team’s strong season with a profile of the Ramblers’ biggest fan and source of inspiration, team chaplain Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM. You’ll read about the students whose outstanding scholarship and service were honored with the 2006-07 President’s Medallion. Additionally, you’ll learn about the many ways your gifts are helping the University to meet its strategic objectives and educate the next generation of Loyola students.

The Stritch Annual Award Dinner is always a joyous occasion recognizing the achievements of the medical school and honoring those who so generously support it. This year, the event became a special opportunity to thank my colleague Dr. Anthony Barbato for his long and committed service as president and CEO of the Loyola University Health System. I am extremely grateful for Dr. Barbato’s leadership of LUHS, and I look forward to working with his talented successor, Dr. Paul Whelton (see page 34).

Your ongoing enthusiasm, involvement, and support help Loyola fulfill its promise of preparing people to lead extraordinary lives. Thank you for your continued commitment to Loyola University Chicago and the students we serve.

Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.
President, Loyola University Chicago
