Creating Tomorrow's Responsible Business Leaders

Loyola’s School of Business Administration’s (SBA) plan for the future capitalizes on the SBA’s unique strengths.

As one of the University’s top priorities, the SBA is in transition. Dean Abol Jalilvand, PhD, says the SBA’s goal is to become the top Jesuit business school in the nation.

“I think the business school has taken tremendous strides to improve its visibility and strengthen its programs,” says Jalilvand. “We have begun to change the culture of research and teaching and to become more competitive.”

The SBA’s renowned scholars and educators position it highly among its peers, and the school is committed to becoming even more of a leader within a globally competitive landscape. The SBA boasts an energetic and imaginative leadership team, a realistic and achievable strategic plan, and
a clear vision for the future.

Here are a few examples of recent successes and indications of greater things to come:

• Our well-respected undergraduate program enjoys strong enrollments and has plans for further growth. “We want to be the major Chicago-area undergraduate program in business,” says Faruk Guder, PhD, associate dean for faculty and administration, who says the SBA expects to increase enrollment by 30 percent over the next five years as it continues to attract top-quality students.

• Our part-time MBA program, ranked in the top 20 among AACSB schools for the second consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report, is also growing. The program incorporates an innovative curriculum emphasizing responsible leadership.

• Several specialized graduate programs and centers, focusing on emerging business issues, differentiate our school. The study of risk management, for example, is woven throughout our curriculum and research and is supported by the new Center for Risk Management and Corporate Governance. A specialized MBA in health care management begins in the fall, in cooperation with Loyola’s schools of medicine, nursing, and law. We have also introduced new MBA concentrations in entrepreneurship, risk management, and sport management.

• To accommodate and support this growth, we are undertaking a comprehensive program of faculty renewal and expansion, supplementing our great teaching with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and global research. Our renowned faculty is engaged in a wide variety of innovative research on today’s important business issues. To learn more, visit www.sba.luc.edu/research/faculty.

In this special section of Loyola magazine, you’ll read about the ways the SBA is working toward fulfilling its ambitious goals, always with an eye to the mission of forming responsible business leaders.

“Our mission is what sets Loyola apart,” says Jalilvand. “Everything we engage in, from teaching to research to service, is about integrity and ethics, interdisciplinarity and integration, appropriate risk-taking and innovation, and the synthesis of global perspectives. It’s this emphasis on educating not just for excellence, but also for responsibility, that defines Loyola business leaders of tomorrow.”

We hope you enjoy reading and learning about the great things happening at Loyola’s SBA.
