2012 Incoming Graduate Student Class

As you can see here, it was loads of fun. 

 

 • Do you know where this is on campus?

CAPE program exercise (summer 2012). Find this building, and construct the formula for a function you recognize there. This summer, high school students from Chicago Public Schools in the CAPE program were asked to find this and other buildings on campus, then make a scale drawing and use equations to model the structure. The equations that were produced were later projected on to the figure to see if the equations matched the structure.  The CAPE program was sponsored by the Center for Science and Math Education. The program was in its third year and brought high school seniors together for a pre-advanced placement experience. The program focused on students that would be taking AP Calculus in the fall at their high schools.  Drs. Steven Jordan and Laurie Jordan from the Department of Mathematics & Statistics instructed the students in the two week program.

 

 

Faculty news and accolades

 • The department wishes to express its gratitude to its Chair for the past five years, Robert Jensen, as well as long-time Undergraduate Program Director Alan Saleski. Both returned to full-time teaching and scholarly activities in July, 2012. Dr. Jensen's tenure as Chair is marked by the successful recruitment of outstanding faculty members whose contributions have already markedly improved the department's teaching and research profiles. Dr Saleski's service contributions to the Department, the University, and our students are too numerous to quantify. The Department was well-served by the commitment to excellence that both Dr. Jensen and Dr. Saleski embodied.

 • The department welcomes the addition of new faculty for Fall 2012: Our new Assistant Professor in Mathematics is Dr. Peter Tingley. Our new Instructor is Dr. Aaron Greicius. Finally, John Houlihan, Bret Longman, and Drs. Danut Arama and Cristina Popovici join us on one-year appointments.

 • Announcing the continuation of the speaker series, again cosponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, Undergraduate Colloquium Series in the Mathematical Sciences, wherein speakers will connect mathematics and statistics to a variety of disciplines within the college.  • Dr. Rafal Goebel coauthors graduate text on Hybrid Dynamical Systems.

 • A hearty ‘goodbye’ to beloved part-time instructor Jennifer Keith, who leaves the department for a PhD program in Applied Math (UC -- Davis).

 • Dr. Stephen Doty awarded a Simons Foundation Collaboration Grant (Generalized q-Schur algebras and representation theory), 2012—2017.

 • Dr. Laurie Jordan awarded a grant from the Chicago Archdiocese to run professional development workshops for teachers in the middle grades, 2012—2013.

 • Dr. Peter Tingley awarded an NSF DMS Grant (Affine crystals: algebra, combinatorics and geometry),
2012—2015.

 • Dr. Stephen Doty awarded research leave of absence for Spring 2013; accepts Ulam Visiting Professorship (U. Colorado – Boulder)

 

Recent accomplishments of our undergraduate and graduate students

 • Two Mathematics Students awarded two of 30 Mulcahy Scholarships for AY 2012-2013: John Versnel (working under Drs. Anthony Giaquinto and Aaron Lauve) and George Seelinger (working under Drs. Stephen Doty and Aaron Lauve) will receive a stipend of $1000 and budget of $2000 to pursue their research projects.
