Some advice to M.S. and B.S. Statistics students and recent graduates
Students and graduates would be wise to email resumes to area businesses (Allstate, Sears, CNA, AC Nielsen), otherwise Pharma companies (Abbott, Tap, Takeda are in Chicagoland), universities (UIC, Northwestern, U. Chicago, Rush, etc.), and so on.
Also, a good strategy is to work as a Summer Intern if possible. Most of these and other organizations have internship programs in Mathematics/Statistics, but be sure to apply early.
Jobs can also be found at trading companies associated with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade, and the Chicago Board Options Exchange. Posting your resume can and does result in a summer internship and that frequently turns into a full time job. Preferred skills include statistics (SAS programming) and computer programming, as well as mathematical reasoning. Taking the classes in Financial Math, Simulation and Modeling, and Operations Research, is extremely useful in a job interview.
Entry-level jobs can often be obtained by working for a CRO = Contract Research Organization. A Google search on "CRO biostatistics" turned up 100,000 hits!
Don't forget the Mayo Clinic, City of Hope, etc. Be creative in your job search!
