Dr Spiegler earned his Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Arizona in 2006, where he served as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Mathematics from 2006 – 2007. While at the University of Arizona, he studied the dynamics of the n dimensional free rigid body. Dr Spiegler’s research interests are in symplectic geometry, Lie groups, Hamiltonian systems, and mathematical education. Dr Spiegler was awarded a VIGRE grant from the National Science Foundation in 2003-2004 in order to develop workshops in knot theory and probability/game theory. These workshops were intended for high school students from diverse backgrounds which are typically underrepresented in mathematics. He is currently exploring the applications of the underlying geometry of Lie groups inherent in systems with symmetry such as the rigid body, and he plans to continue to develop high school outreach programs in the Chicago area.
