Alternative Break Immersions (ABIs)

Do Justice · Build Community · Keep Faith · Live Simply
Through Service, Education, Reflection and Prayer

Serve and learn in communities around the United States and abroad during academic breaks through the Alternative Break Immersion (ABI) program. Alternative Break Immersions (ABIs) provide participants opportunities to expand learning beyond the classroom in the context of direct service and action. Immersions are intensive experiments in the basis and framework of Jesuit education – the integration of faith, knowledge, and service. Through immersions we seek to live simply, keep faith, build community and do justice while sharing work and gaining new awareness from our interactions with diverse communities and one another.

Space is limited and a waiting list is typical of each application process. Limited financial assistance will be awarded.

Find your way on an ABI and immerse yourself in the world....

  • Urban Immersion for First-Yr. Students: August 28-30, & September 11-13, 2009
This urban immersion is open to all First-Year students (a.k.a. Freshmen). The goal of this weekend is to engage with different parts of Chicago through hands-on experiences. We will learn about some of the social issues in our city as well as listen to the hopes of people struggling to thrive in an urban environment. We will meet with organizations working to make a difference, have cross-cultural experiences and lots of fun! We hope to expand our experience of God and give you a greater understanding of the city in partnership with the Br. David Darst Center.
