Hunger week 2008: "For the Common Good"

Hunger Week relies solely on the enthusiasm and dedication of Loyola students, and our goal is to increase student participation! Your organization’s participation is a great way to better immerse yourselves in the community, as well as serve people in need.
The Mission of Hunger Week is:
To cultivate compassion in the community by educating and raising funds as we strive to stand in global solidarity with those who Hunger.
"What do You Hunger for?"
“We can alter the way we live our lives so that others have the gift of that same life and the same basic human rights that we are granted. Hunger Week’s message is that working for justice, specifically the basic human right of food, is not just a part of our life, but can be inherent in the way we live.” -Senior LUC Student
Simpson dining went trayless for hunger week!
Simpson Dining for Hunger Week 2008 offered a week long opportunity to educate the community about the limitations of dietary resources of a developing country. During Hunger Week, November 3rd-6th Simpson offered a “Hunger Week” meal option, which included food from a developing country. Students were encouraged to participate by pledging to eat as many as 6 “Hunger Week” meals. By doing so they supported the idea of reducing the amount of consumed food, to be in solidarity with those who hunger, conserve natural resources, and reduce our impact on the environment.
As many times as students ate the Hunger Week Meal (and punched their card) their name went into a raffle for some really great prizes!
All contributions made during Hunger Week were donated to The Chicago Greater Food Depository, Food For All, and The Heifer Project International.

2008 Beneficiaries
Chicago's Community Kitchens
Since its inception in 1998, Chicago’s Community Kitchens has been aiding unemployed and underemployed adults in Cook County who have a passion for "life in the kitchen" and a will to achieve entry-level employment in the foodservice industry. Students create nearly 2,000 meals a day that are delivered to Food Depository Kids Cafes, providing nourishing meals to hungry children after school.
Food For All
Food For All is a 501(c)(3) non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to putting an end to the hunger crisis on both national and international fronts. In order to accomplish this goal, Food For All collaborates with over 8,000 grocery retailers nationwide to raise money through point-of-purchase (P.O.P.) fundraisers. Along with fighting hunger and poverty, Food For All is proud to support efforts to combat childhood obesity and early chronic diseases.
Heifer Project International
Today, millions of people who were once hungry will be nourished by milk, eggs and fresh vegetables. Families who for generations knew only poverty will be building new homes and starting businesses. Children who once headed out to the fields to do backbreaking work will be heading into schoolrooms to learn to read. And people who never thought they’d be in a position to help someone else will be experiencing the joy of charitable giving. Heifer has learned over the years that a holistic approach is necessary in order to build sustainable communities. So we’ve developed a set of global initiatives – areas of emphasis that must be addressed if we’re to meet our mission of ending world hunger and poverty and caring for the earth.
