Detroit 2014

The 56th Annual Convention will be held in Detroit, Michigan at the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton from November 13-16, 2014.

The 2014 informal convention theme is "The Lives of Cities."

Possible sub-themes include:
  • Urban development / decline / renewal
  • Industrial change
  • Economic fluctuations: poverty, wealth and class conflict
  • cosmopolitanism
  • Fantasies of urban life
  • The city as a destination
  • Urban farming
  • Labor migrations into, and suburban flight from, the city
  • The physical city: urban planning, transportation, parks / playgrounds
  • Ruins, past and present
  • Urban and public art
  • Gendered and queer urban spaces
  • Public and private spaces
  • Terror and the city
  • Suburbs, exburbs and beyond
  • Crowds and solitude

2014 Keynote Speaker

This year the President's Keynote speaker will be James D. Griffioen, a Detroit-based photographer and writer. Please explore some of his photography on his website.

Registration Fees

The registration fees for the 56th Annual Convention in Detroit, MI are as follows:

  • Regular Registration (for all full-time faculty, administrators, schoolteachers, and librarians):
    $95.00 - Before October 18th midnight

  • Special Registration (for students, independent scholars, part-time, unemployed or retired members only): $45.00 - Before October 18th midnight

 

Registration Fees are Non-Refundable.

Registering for the Convention

All attendees must be members of the association to attend the convention. The deadline for convention presenters to pre-register is Monday, June 17, 2014. Registration can be easily complete via mail or online using a third party vendor, 123Signup.

IMPORTANT: Because of printing deadlines, convention presenters must register by Monday, June 17, 2014 in order to be included in the printed program.

    Registration fees and membership dues are separate items that must be purchased. This link allows you to pay them both at the same time, but they are separate line items that must be selected.

    NOTE: A convenience fee is charged when using the third-party vendor, 123Signup, for online registration.

    IMPORTANT: Pre-registration for convention presenters and non-presenters will end on Friday, October 18, 2014. After October 18th, late and on-site registration will be necessary.

    Group Registrations

    The MMLA does not provide group registrations for departments or schools. All convention registrations are individual.

On-site Registration

Late and on-site registration becomes effective after October 18th. Late and onsite registration via the U.S mail will not be accepted. The late and on-site registration fees and be paid online after October 18th and are as follows:

  • Regular Registration (for all full-time faculty, administrators, schoolteachers, and librarians):
    $160.00 - After October 18th and on-site

  • Special Registration (for students, independent scholars, part-time, unemployed or retired members only): $80.00 - After October 18th and on-site

NOTE: Special registration is for students, part-time, unemployed or retired members only.

IMPORTANT: Any registration forms received via the U.S. mail after October 18th will not be accepted and the funds will be returned.

Credit cards will not be accepted on-site. Late and on-site registration fees can only be paid using cash, check or via our third-party online vendor, 123SignUp.
