WIND ENSEMBLE – MUSC 110

Woodwinds and Brass Requirements:
• Play a chromatic scale spanning the full range of your instrument (ascending/descending), or at least two octaves. Be able to play tongued or slurred. A demonstration of major/minor scales is a plus, but not required.
• Required audition excerpts for each instrument posted on Sakai.

NOTE: each instrument has two excerpts. You must prepare at least one, and preparing two can help for chair placement.

• If you did not audition in the fall, you may prepare: Two short, contrasting excerpts from an etude, solo, or other work(s) that highlight your lyrical (slow) as well as technical (fast) capabilities. Prepare no more than 2-3 minutes worth of excerpts.

Percussion Requirements:
• Required audition excerpts posted on Sakai. There will be a snare and a keyboard excerpt.
• Be prepared to demonstrate technique on timpani, suspended cymbal, hand crash cymbals, tambourine, triangle, etc.

Remember to sign up for the class before selecting your audition time. Only those enrolled in the class will be able to audition.  Auditions take place during the first few days of the 2014 fall semester, August 25-28.

ORCHESTRA – MUSC 105

Audition requirements:

Two contrasting selections lasting no longer than 7 minutes.  Scales and sight reading will be requested.

Audition information will be sent to registered students via their LUC email account in early August. Lastly, remember to sign up for the class before selecting your audition time. Only those enrolled in the class will be able to audition. Auditions take place during the first few days of the fall semester, August 25-28.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE – MUSC 109

Requirements:
Please prepare the following for your audition. If needed, sample etudes for each instrument will be emailed to registered students at their LUC email account in early August. If you have any questions regarding the requirements, please email Director Scott Burns atsburns5@luc.edu.

Saxophone/Trumpet/Trombone/Piano/Guitar/Vibraphone:
• Chromatic scale spanning the entire range of your instrument (ascending & descending), or at least two octaves. A major or minor scale of your choice is also required (piano: play scales two-handed).
• A short etude or excerpt in the jazz style (a jazz etude, a piece of jazz ensemble music, a published solo transcription, etc.) that demonstrates moderate technical facility on your instrument. No more than 2-3 minutes worth of music are required.
• Pianists, guitarists, and vibraphonists should demonstrate ability to play both melodic material and chord voicings.
• OPTIONAL: If you have improvising experience (not required for eligibility to participate!), play a brief improvisation on the blues form in the key of F or Bb. A play-along for you to practice with can be supplied to you if you don’t have one.

Bass:
• Chromatic scale spanning the entire range of your instrument is (ascending & descending), or at least two octaves. A major or minor scale of your choice is also required.
• Walk a bass line on the following chord progressions (if needed, sample bass lines can be provided for you).

-12 bar blues in the key of Bb or F
- Bb rhythm changes (the chord progression to “I Got Rhythm”).

Drums:
• Demonstrate basic time-keeping ability in the following styles at a variety of tempos: swing, bossa-nova, straight 8th Latin, rock/funk.

UNIVERSITY CHORALE (MUSC 107) and CHAMBER CHOIR (MUSC 207)

Auditionees for both University Chorale and Chamber Choir will be asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner and sight read. These auditions will take place in the Mundelein Center, Room 1016.

If you are accepted to University Chorale you will need to register for MUSC 107-11E.
If you are accepted to Chamber Choir you will need to register for MUSC 207.

Students interested in Women’s Chorus (MUSC 107-12E) are encouraged to come and audition during this time as well, although an audition is not necessary to gain entrance into this class.

MUSC 107-11E – University Chorale (1 credit hour)
An auditioned group of 50-60 singers, University Chorale performs challenging repertoire and pursues musical preparation at an advanced level. The Chorale performs several times each semester and often performs with the University Orchestra, as well as other student and professional musicians.

MUSC 107-12E – Women’s Chorus (1 credit hour)
Women’s Chorus provides singers who are new to the choral program an opportunity to review vocal technique, musicianship skills, and rehearsal technique at the collegiate level. The Chorus performs several times each semester and collaborates with the University Chorale and University Orchestra.

MUSC 207-101 – Chamber Choir (1 credit hour)
Drawn from University Chorale membership, the Chamber Choir is an auditioned ensemble of singers performing works written for the smaller vocal ensemble. Music from all periods of history and representing a wide variety of compositional styles are explored and performed. The Chamber Choir performs several times each semester in concerts at Loyola and collaborates with the other ensembles of the university.
