Dr. Kostovich has a dual program of research including educational research and the study of the phenomenon of nursing presence. Nursing presence, the emotional ‘being with’ patients and the physical ‘doing for’ patients, is central to the role of the professional registered nurse. Dr. Kostovich developed, tested and evaluated the psychometric properties of the Presence of Nursing Scale (PONS) designed to measure patients’ perceptions of the nurse’s presence, and the Presence of Nursing Scale- RN Version (PONS-RN) designed to measure registered nurses’ perceptions of being present for their patients. Both instruments have been used nationally and internationally. Currently, Dr. Kostovich is studying the relationship between nursing presence and the delivery of patient-centered nursing care. Dr. Kostovich has also studied teaching/learning strategies, including photo journaling, concept mapping, mentoring/precepting, automatic response units (‘clickers’), learning style preference, and studying abroad.
