Dr. Poronsky’s research interest is the transition from Registered Nurse (RN) to Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and the effect of mentoring. Her PhD Dissertation explored the effect of faculty mentoring on transition balance in Family Nurse Practitioner students. Additional research, supported in part by funding from the Ruth K. Palmer Memorial Endowment Fund, was conducted with focus groups to examine how nurse practitioner students experience the transition from RN to FNP during graduate school.
In 2010, she presented a poster of her research findings from a pilot study of "Exploring Differences in Nurse Practitioner Student Learning Outcomes Based on Degree of Faculty-to-Student Interaction" at the 36th Annual Meeting of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties in Washington, D.C.
In 2012 her literature review of mentoring for RN to FNP transition was published in the Journal of Nursing Education. Her work on exploring the transition from Registered Nurse to Family Nurse Practitioner was published in 2013 in the Journal of Professional Nursing.
Other interests and expertise: Dr. Poronsky provides primary healthcare as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is actively engaged in health promotion, disease prevention, and management of common health problems with patients across the lifespan.
Dr. Poronsky is the director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program and teaches at the master’s level. She has taught advanced adult and pediatric health assessment and advanced practice courses in the management of common and complex problems of adults/older adults. She is the co-coordinator for the advanced practice primary care clinical courses, including management of clinical placements for NP students. Dr. Poronsky serves as academic advisor for graduate students in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
She is interested and engaged in mentoring students, including helping to guide students towards publication of their scholarly work..
Dr. Poronsky began service to the School of Nursing on the Master’s and DNP Program Chairs Committee in 2010. She chaired this committee for 3 terms, 2012-2015. She is currently Chair of the School of Nursing Faculty Search Committee (2015-2016). Other committee memberships include the Evaluation Committee (2014-2016) and a completed term on the Executive Committee.
She is a member of several state and national nursing organizations and served as a member of the reimbursement committee for the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing. She is an active member of her parish and local community where she has served in both volunteer and elected positions.
Dr. Poronsky also served on the Community Advisory Board, WTTW (PBS) Television Chicago. She has had a long standing active engagement with expanding healthcare to the uninsured, including service on the volunteer boards of several metropolitan Chicago organizations.
