Lawndale 10 Cineplex

-By David Bailey

Just five years ago, the strip of property at Homan Avenue and Roosevelt Road was vacant with nothing but weeds and garbage surrounding it. Thanks to the newly built Lawndale 10 Cineplex Theater and Shopping center, the area of Lawndale has revamped its image and now features some of the hottest attractions in Chicago.

Lawndale 10 Cineplex, located on the West Side of Chicago is an entertainment venue that is trying to create a solid foundation for the North Lawndale community.

The history of Lawndale 10 Cineplex dates back to September 1997. An African American-owned firm, Inner City Entertainment (I.C.E.), collaborated with Cineplex Odeon, and constructed a 10-screen movie theater that employs 65 people. "Building movie theaters in African American neighborhoods is important to me and my company," says Donell Sparks, president of I.C.E. "Lawndale 10 Cineplex is a great place to come see a movie without worrying about violence because the police station is next door," says Shakida Dower 18, of Chicago.

The movie listings and times are posted on the outside of the building. There is also a 200-car parking lot with 24-hour security. "The best thing about the parking lot is not the free parking, but its proximity to the theater," says Steve Jones 35, of Chicago.

Inside the theater there are two ticket booths, five concession stands and eight restrooms. The 10-screen complex seats 95 people in each theater. "It's good for most people in the neighborhood because we don't have to travel far to go see a movie," says Antwain Wiggins 17, of Chicago.

The Roosevelt-Homan district was vacant for 25-years, until I.C.E. was granted the property. "This project helped improve the development options for other existing companies," says Sparks.

Lawndale 10 Cineplex is located at 3300 W. Roosevelt Road in Chicago For more information call (773) 265-1010.
