Hate Crime Awareness Week (Spring 2008)
Purpose
Started in 2005, Hate Crime Awareness Week (HCAW) is organized around the National Day of Silence to honor those who have been silenced due from being victims of violent discrimination. Hate Crime Awareness Week extends the activities to any underrepresented population who faces violent discrimination (i.e., based on sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, etc).
The goals of the week are to:
- Provide the Loyola community with an understanding of the discrimination underrepresented groups face in day-to-day life.
- Educate the Loyola community on actions that can be taken to alleviate violence and stereotypes directed at minority people.
- Provide a safe and supporting environment for people of all groups to share discriminatory experiences they may have faced.

Wednesday April 2nd
Movie Screening- Saving Face, 7 pm, Damen Hall 832
For 28-year-old New Yorker Wilhelmina "Wil" Pang (Michelle Krusiec), life is a juggling act between a promising career as a surgeon and her responsibilities as a dutiful daughter. Like the #7 train she takes to visit her Chinese family on a weekly basis, Wil is perpetually in transit between two worlds. The expectations of the Flushing, Queens society she is from and the desires that alienate her from it have made Wil content to live below the surface -- even if it means playing an inadvertent game of charades with her widowed mother (Joan Chen) and the old world Ma represents. The masquerade is comic even in its pain as Wil tolerates Ma's weekly set ups with eligible Chinese-American boys at the Friday Chinese socials; but it quickly becomes a farce when Ma's mask cracks first.
One night, Wil comes home to find Ma on her doorstep -- pregnant. Disgraced by the Chinese community, and with nowhere else to go, Ma moves in with her daughter, making it difficult for Wil to nurture a budding relationship with gorgeous dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen). As her carefully compartmentalized worlds collide, Wil is forced to find her mother a husband, placate her girlfriend, and choose between breaking a cycle of keeping up appearances, or risk losing the girl she loves.

Take Back the Night
This is the most important and empowering event of this week. It inspires both women and men to confront a myriad of social ills including rape, sexual violence, domestic violence, violence against children and violence against women. The unifying theme throughout these diverse topics is the assertion that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim these rights if they are violated.
Dinner and Open Mic, 6:00PM Bremner Lounge (CFSU)
All are invited to share artwork, music and poetry relating to the themes discussed above. For anonymous submissions: SAAG@luc.edu
Rally and March, 7:00PM Rogers Park Neighborhood
We will leave from Bremner Lounge and march through the Loyola neighborhood as a symbol and demonstration of our resistance to sexual violence in our community.
Speak Out, 8:30PM, Mertz Lawn
The speak out is a chance for any participants to share their feelings, reactions, ideas, thoughts personal experiences, etc. relating to sexual assault. Tunnel of Oppression (formally Deconstrucion Zone)
This two day event is an experimential presentation, allowing participants to walk through from room to room. Each room has different presentations or images depicting the pain caused by stereotyping, oppression, discrimination, and hatred. After going through the program, participants will have a chance to process their feelings and reactions to the scenes with Loyola faculty and staff. They will also be encouraged to find ways to end hate and oppression in their own liefs. The program is now in its fourth year at Loyola and is a collaborative effort between the offices of Student Diversity, Residence Life, University Ministry, and Hillel.
If you are interested in helping Advocate creat and perform a presentation (even if you cannot attend the regular meetings), contact us at Advocate@luc.edu!
