Welcome to Loyola University's History Graduate Student Association. The Loyola University of Chicago History Graduate Student Association
(HGSA) represents the interests of enrolled full-time and part-time Loyola history graduate students to the institution's faculty, staff, and administration. The HGSA works primarily to serve the needs of all graduate students in the history department.
Five officers, a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and
media coordinator are elected annually each fall to represent the needs of the history graduate student body.
Created in 1999, the HGSA seeks to cultivate academic excellence and community among the graduate student body through workshops, conferences, informal gatherings, and the limited funding of student activities. Since 2004 the HGSA has focused on transitioning into a more formal and active organization. The HGSA is responsible for assisting in the development of graduate orientation for first year students, department-wide social events, and workshops on navigating graduate studies in history.
The HGSA's primary event is the Annual Loyola University Chicago History Graduate Student Conference. First held on May 14, 2005, this event was co-sponsored by the LUC Department of History and the
HGSA. In its first year, the conference brought together over thirty-three students from local, regional and national graduate history programs and included the participation of thirteen LUC Department of History faculty members. Based on the success of the conference and the enthusiastic support of the department, the HGSA has established an annual event that will continue to draw interest and participation from other graduate programs throughout the nation. During the second year of the conference, the numbers grew and students from nearly twenty different universities participated. The
