Spring 2007

Cord Scott (Ph.D. Student - American History) - Cord has two upcoming journal articles: "Written in Red White and Blue: a comparison of WWII and 9-11 comics" Journal of Popular Culture (March 2007) and "History (hopefully) repeats itself: the All-Chicago World Series of 1906" Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society (April 2007). In addition, Cord contributed 16 entries to the forthcoming Encyclopedia of American Urban History and is busy preparing his dissertation proposal. In addition, Cord will be giving a talk entitled “Modern War Comics and their Perspectives on War” at the Oak Park Public Library on March 14th at 7pm.  

Jason Myers (Ph.D. Student–Modern Europe) – While Jason is busy finishing his last semester of coursework, he recently passed his minor field exam in American History and has an article under review with the Black Music Research Journal. Additionally, he will be presenting a paper on Irish history at the 29th Annual Warren I. Susman Graduate History Conference at Rutgers University on March, 31 2007 and contributing an entry on Bob Dylan to the Encyclopedia of the Culture Wars.

Melisa Davis (Ph.D. Student – Public History/American History) – Melisa recently presented at a poster session during the Organization of American Historians Conference held in Minneapolis, MN from March 30-April 1, 2007. Her work entitled, “Chippewa Valley Rosies: The Economic, Social and Cultural Impact of World War II on the Women of the Chippewa Valley,” received a lot of positive feedback and is currently under review by the “Women and Social Movements” online database.

Stella Ress (Ph.D Student – American History) - Stella completed her internship at the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center in the Fall of 2006.  The exhibit, in which she helped research, design, and construct, "Nourishing Culture: Greeks and Food in Chicago" opened up on March 9, 2007.  It runs through September of 2007.  Recently, she was suprised and delighted to hear that fellow Greek American, Billy Zane, paid the exhibit a visit.  For those of you that know Stella, you know that this is big news for her and that she'll probably talk about this forever.  For more information on the exhibit, visit the Museum's website at:

An exciting year for her all around, her piece on "Child Labor" was published in the newly released Encyclopedia of American Urban History and she has an article under review in the Journal of Popular Culture.
