Stand Up! Help Out! is an after-school camp for high school students in the Bronzeville area of Chicago which started in 2006.
Bronzeville is an historic African-American community on the South side of Chicago that is in the midst of massive redevelopment. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) has demolished 40-year-old public housing in order to make way for new mixed-income housing. The Bronzeville community is under stress and in a critical transition.
The youth of Stand Up! Help Out! have provided social services to their community — tutoring younger students, setting up health fairs, organizing marches against violence, and documenting their own stories. See what they've done so far!
Stand Up! Help Out! is funded and operated by After-School Matters in Chicago, IL and Loyola University Chicago.
