- The teens mentored and tutored elementary students (grades 4-5) at Wadsworth Elementary School for one hour per week. Part of the mentoring preparation included educational sessions on child development and training sessions on how to manage behavior and build positive relationships with younger students.
- The teens filmed a documentary about their experiences mentoring Wadsworth youth.
- The teens participated in discussions on topics such as dating, violence, and peer pressure.
- The teens participated two small groups after each mentoring session with an instructor to process their mentoring experiences, what they learned about themselves, and how better to address challenges that accompany mentoring youth in the future.
- Individual counseling and small group discussions were provided as needed.
- To enhance their experience mentoring youth, the teens were exposed to speakers in the fields of child psychology, social work, and lawyers who protect and defend child welfare both nationally and internationally.
Summer 2009
This Pre-apprenticeship program served 15 youth in the Woodlawn Community. The youth were introduced to social work and mental health issues focused on relationships and sexuality. The topics they addressed were:
- Sexual identity concerns including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual orientations
- Violence in romantic relationships, including dating violence, rape, and domestic violence
They also:
- Went on field trips to Domestic Violence Court, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Boystown, Metropolitan Family Services, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Loyola University Chicago for a Mock Trial.
- Carried out community service, learning about gardening and improving the garden at Woodlawn Charter School.
Fall 2008 and Spring 2009: Apprenticeship in the Helping Professions
This apprenticeship program served 15 youth. Extending the Summer, 2008 program, these youth:
- deepened their knowledge about social work,
- focused on reproductive health, safety in sexuality, and pregnancy prevention.
Guest speakers were brought in from:
- the Center on Halstead to discuss HIV/AIDS,
- Chicago Women's Health Center to discuss both STD education and prevention and Teen Pregnancy prevention and sexual health education, and
- Sister's Working it Out to discuss breast health and breast cancer detection and prevention.
During the Spring, 2009 program the apprentices continued their focus on sexuality and learned about:
- violence in a dating context,
- resolving conflicts constructively, They also
- authored a documentary about sexual sexuality and discrimination,
- developed a health fair about STDs which they presented to the Donoghue SUHO apprentices and other youth,
- developed resumes and practiced job interviewing,
- attended a college fair.
Summer 2008: Pre-Apprenticeship in the Helping Professions
- All youth were trained in conflict resolution and peer mediation.
- All youth were trained in CPR.
- The youth visited three colleges.
- Youth engaged in community service projects, including mentoring younger children and assisting at a local nursing home.
- Youth were exposed to a number of guest speakers talking about potential careers, including criminal justice, nursing, architecture, and social work.
- Youth engaged in conversations about discrimination, culminating in a short film about the topic and documenting their program.
