The official university logo should be used on all printed materials including but not limited to: brochures,
flyers, ads, direct-mail pieces, booklets, newsletters, posters, postcards, etc. The logo also is to be used in
electronic communication, including on the university Website or in e-mails with graphics.
Logos: How to Obtain (internal only)
The Identity & Design Department, in conjunction with Information Services, has made it possible for anyone
in the university community to easily download both black and white, and color PC TIFF files. To download
logos for print, visit the logo download page and follow the instructions. Contact Web Support for approved university web templates that include the logo.
General guidelines
New Version: Please note that the logo was updated in fall 2004 with the new tagline: "Preparing People to Lead Extraordinary Lives." If you are printing a new project, or reprinting existing materials, please use or
update the logo with the newest version. There is no need to destroy any existing materials; just be sure to
add the new version of the logo to any new materials or reprints. If your Web page still has an outdated
logo, please contact Web Support. The creation of any other taglines is forbidden.
Authorized versions only: At no time should you construct a logo from scratch. Ready-made logos are
available either by downloading, or by contacting Identity & Design to send electronic or "camera-ready"
formats.
Fixed arrangement: The university name is stacked in three lines of type, with the horizontal rule placed above the top edge of the word "Loyola." The complete university signature consists of the shield and motto,
the university name (Loyola University Chicago), the tagline, the Promise and a horizontal rule. This specific
arrangement is called the "lock-up" because all elements are locked together and may not, at any time, be
rearranged. The horizontal rule may be shortened to fit a design, but its thickness cannot be altered.
Minimum size: Do not print the logo smaller than 3/8-inch of the width of the shield. The logo should have a minimum of 1/4-inch of white space around all sides. That means no other elements, such as images or
type, may come within 1/4-inch of the logo.
Keep it visible: Never print type over the university logo or screen the logo for use as a background.
Get approval: If you are using the logo on a printed piece, please fax the final design to Identity & Design (5-6185) for final approval.
Logo positioning
On the exterior: The official logo (or, ceremonial logo, if approved), should appear, whenever possible, on the front of all printed materials. Alternately, the Loyola wordmark may be used at the center top of the cover. If cover placement of the logo is not possible, then it must appear on the back of the piece.Whether on the front or back (or both), the logo may be positioned at the top right or left, or at the
bottom right. It must be given prominence in the design.
With photos: It is acceptable for a logo to be placed over photos, but only if the logo can be read clearly and in its entirety. If the logo is placed over a dark section of a photo, then the logo is reversed to white through the use of the wireframe versions of the official and ceremonial logos.
On the Web: Logos for use on Loyola Web pages are already positioned on Web-page templates available through Web Support.
On stationery: Logos on all stationery (letterhead, envelopes) are pre-printed and conform to approved university guidelines. The Department of Printing Services prints all stationery for official university use. For ordering information, please contact 6-9283.
Restricted option: If it is impossible to fit or print a logo on certain printed materials or merchandise
(e.g., a pencil), then use of the entire name—Loyola University Chicago—is permitted as a substitute for the logo.
The name must appear prominently. Such uses should be cleared with the Identity & Design at the Division of University
Marketing and Communications (5-6213).
Name designations: A campus, school, institute, center or department designation may be used along with the university identity in the official logo, wherever appropriate. For stationery items, a campus, school, center, institute or department designation must always be used. The words "Loyola University Chicago" as well as
campus, school, department and other designations (e.g., "School of Social Work") are set in Minion typeface
whenever they are directly associated with the logo lock-up (university shield, name, rule, etc.).
Example
The name designation is set flush left below the university name. Its baseline is the same as the tip of the shield.
The designation should be set in Minion to match the size of the Promise.
Logo colors
(For official logo and for ceremonial shield logo)
Official university colors:
Maroon (PMS 208); Gold (PMS 137); Black
- Colors required for the full 3-color logo: Maroon shield and motto; gold stripes in shield; and black LUC name, Promise line and rule.
- For 2-color logo: Maroon shield and motto; with black LUC name, Promise line and rule.
- For 1-color logo: Use maroon or black for entire logo.
- Special-color printing: Metallic gold (PMS 873) in the logo is permitted for formal or ceremonial
purposes. However, use of the metallic gold in the logo must first be approved by the Identity & Design at the Division
of University Marketing and Communications. Please call 5-6213 for approval.
- Note: The color gray is only used in the logo by Printing Services on official university stationery and
business cards. Printing Services will soon begin replacing the gray with black on official stationery.
Dark backgrounds
- When printing the university logo on a dark background: The type (motto, university name and
tagline), the date, the striped field, the wolves and the rule are reversed to white or another very light color.
However, the shield itself becomes part of the dark background leaving only a wireframe of the shield in
white or in a light color (see example below).
- When printing the logo on a dark background color, choose to either print on a light-colored paper to allow
for a reverse; or print in a color (preferably white) with sufficient contrast relative to the background color.
- When printing the logo on a dark or black background, contact Identity & Design at 5-6213 for further
instructions and approval.
