PHIL 440: American Responses to the Enlightenment

This course will study the rise of Enlightenment Modernity in the American colonies and in the early 19th century US as well as its critique by American Transcendentalists and by American Pragmatists.  Figures studied: Franklin, the Federalists, Jefferson, Allen, Palmer, Emerson, Parker, Brownson, Abbot, Peirce, Royce.
