“I am convinced that there is an acute need for non-ideal normative moral theory, especially non-ideal rights theory. The basic rights we endorse should reflect social reality and should be capable of ameliorating real-world injustices.”
                           - Diana Meyers

“The common task of philosophers is to trace and articulate networks of meaning. We succeed or fail depending on how we bring the world of persons and things into speech.”
                                        -  Adriaan Peperzak

The Philosophy Department at Loyola University Chicago has one of the largest and most diverse faculties in North America, with thirty full-time faculty members. The department offers a Ph.D. in philosophy as well as three Master's degree programs. The department has adopted two focal areas in its doctoral program: one in ethics and social-political philosophy and one in continental philosophy. Each of these two areas is represented by a faculty member holding an endowed professorship teaching exclusively at the graduate level as well as by several other faculty members regularly teaching in the area at the graduate level. Diana Meyers holds the newly created Ignacio Ellacuría, S.J., Chair in Philosophy. Adriaan Peperzak holds the Arthur J. Schmitt Chair of Philosophy.

Our graduate faculty also includes members who regularly teach in a wide range of other areas, including various aspects of the history of philosophy and many of the topical areas within philosophy. While we have an emphasis on the focus areas that we have identified, we continue our commitment to doctoral education in philosophy in these other areas as well. Further information concerning areas of research is available on individual faculty pages (see here) and recent graduate course offerings can be viewed here.

Our focal areas reflect Loyola University’s commitment, spelled out in the university mission statement, to promote social justice and global awareness. This commitment is also served by offering specialized Master’s degree programs in Social Philosophy and in Bioethics in addition to our standard terminal MA program in philosophy.

We are a diverse department strongly committed to a pluralistic education for our students regardless of the area of focus in their doctoral research. In their seminar work, graduate students are exposed to analytic, continental, and historical approaches and to issues in the principal problem areas of philosophy. Our pedagogical aim is to provide an academic and collegial setting conducive to the development of well-rounded philosophers. At the same time, students are encouraged to develop expertise and practical wisdom in their particular areas of specialization.
