"The Commonwealth and the Rule of Law; Promotion, Adherence and Implementation"
The presentation will provide an overview of the history and constitutional nature of the Organisation from its roots in the British Empire to a fully-fledged intergovernmental organisation with a current global membership of 54 sovereign states spanning every continent in the world and representing over 2 billion individuals. The presentation will look at how the Commonwealth Secretariat in its mission as a ‘trusted partner’ for all Commonwealth peoples promotes the rule of law and human rights through programming and implementation and secures the adherence of its member states to its core values and principles through suspensions and expulsion. The final part of the presentation will look at the future prospects for the Organisation in light of a changing global landscape and the current institutional reform process commenced by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2009 through the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group (‘EPG’).
