Research Interests:
My research focuses on how racial identity influences the comprehensive psychosocial adjustment of minority youth. Particularly among African-American adolescents and emerging adults, I seek to understand how individuals adjust when racial identity becomes salient. A recent emphasis has centered on characterizing how salient aspects of one’s racial identity may help them to negotiate everyday experiences of subtle racism and discrimination.
A second line of work involves clarifying how youth come to identify a sense of direction that is meaningful to them. Specifically, I am interested in how young people cultivate a sense of purpose in life. Two central questions guiding this research ask: To what extent do adolescents engage with a sense of purpose, and how might this sense enable them to capitalize on daily experiences?
