SPRT 345/534 Globalization: International Sport Management
Summer Term: May 12 – 19, 2013
This course provides an overview of the sport industry with an examination of the business of sport in the emerging global community. Various topics include the Olympics, international governance, political, social, and economic challenges along with current and ethical issues in the sport industry and the globalization of sport.
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- increase their awareness of the broad scope of the sport industry
- define the sport industry and the role of the sport manager
- develop an understanding of the historical and business perspectives of the field of sport management.
- identify and illustrate career opportunities in the field of sport management
- demonstrate an understanding of sports from an international perspective
- interpret the processes of globalization in the context of sport
- examine the emergence and diffusion of various sport forms and governing bodies
- show a critical awareness of the major theories and concepts of sport management and globalization and their applications to the sport industry
- develop both written and oral communication skills.
Application Process
- Bring/email copy of study abroad application and passport (or passport application) to Graduate Programs Office by February 1
- NOTE: Expiration on passport must be at least 6 months after date of travel (December 2013)
- Additional paperwork required for Undergraduates
- Pay deposit by February 1
- $500, payable through Loyola’s online payment system - luc.edu/gsb/payments (available December 15)
- We cannot accept checks
- Register for SPRT 534/SPRT 345
- Undergraduate Students: Registration begins February 11
- Graduate Students: Registration begins April 9
- Pay remaining balance by March 15
Student Activity Fee
What’s covered:
- Double-occupancy room accommodations
- Welcome and farewell dinners, breakfasts, several lunches
- Admission to select cultural events
- In-country transportation to group events
What’s not covered:
- Tuition
- Airfare
- Passport and/or visa fees
- University required health & travel insurance (~$15)
- Events not included in itinerary
- Personal spending money
Refund Policy
- Payments will be fully refunded provided Graduate Programs Office receives written notification by February 1
- No refunds after February 1
- LUC cannot refund flight cancellation charges resulting from trip cancellation and/or interruption
- No refunds will be provided for expenses related to obtaining passports and/or visas
- Payments will be fully refunded if trip is cancelled due to serious extenuating circumstances as determined by the University
- Minimum of 12 students needed per trip in order for study abroad to happen
- Do not purchase airfare or visas until the program is confirmed
