About the Program

Loyola University Chicago is involved in an initiative to create a more sustainable university community.  Many Loyola students, faculty, staff, alumni and the extended university community have committed to reducing consumption of materials and energy in the university environment, at home and in their businesses.  One area in which the university is moving forward to become more sustainable is the expansion of the existing recycling program.

On July 1, 2007, Loyola's Lake Shore Campus transitioned from a "post-source" separation to a "separating at the source" process.  "Separating at the source" is more efficient.  In this process, recyclables are not mixed with trash and not contaminated by food waste and other products, therefore increasing their value to be recycled into other products.

The recyclable items (mixed paper, plastics #1-7, aluminum/foil items, and glass) are collected separately from other solid waste items.  Additionally, mixed paper is collected separately from the plastics, cans and glass items, a "dual-stream" collection process.

Currently, the Water Tower Campus operates under the "post-source" separation process and will switch to "separating at the source" by late summer of 2008.

Consumption Reduction & Recycling Advisory Committee

Faculty, staff, and students were invited to be part of a waste reduction and recycling committee to assist in efforts to educate the campus community.  In early 2007, the Consumption Reduction & Recycling Advisory Committee was formed and serves as an advisory group to Facilities Management.

The Committee helps to promote and publicize best management practices and implement processes to minimize or eliminate waste, maximize the use of recycled products, and increase recycling rates, thus resulting in a campus-wide collaboration to reduce consumption of energy.  Additionally, the Committee develops educational strategies to increase the effectiveness of the waste reduction and recycling program.

The Committee meets monthly and welcomes new participants.  For meeting dates and location, visit Get Involved.
