The Departmen of Residence Life is pleased to offer seven Living Learning Communities to incoming freshmen students. These Communities will be in Simpson Living-Learning Center.

Goals:

  • Create intentional learning communities centered on an academic theme
  • Create an environment that encourage growth through the integration of classroom experiences and co-cirricular experiences
  • Assist first-year students with their transition to Loyola University Chicago
  • Promote faculty and staff engagement with first-year students
  • Improve university retention rate of first-year students

Things to Consider about residing in Simpson Hall Living-Learning Communities

  • Being in class with students who live near you and share your interests is an easy way to meet new people and make new friends
  • Students, staff and faculty in our learning communities also participate in activities outside of class that foster stronger student-teacher relationships and promote deeper learning and academic confidence
  • Sharing a few courses encourages dialogue among students and gives you an opportunity to be involved in study groups
  • When you come to Loyola, you are part of a larger community.  Joining a learning community gives you a chance to engage in valuable service to others - both on and off campus
  • The closeness that occurs in a learning community helps first-year students get used to the university experience quickly because they're doing it together

Arts in Society

This community attracts students who wish to explore the power of the arts in society. Students in this community are challenged to deepen their understanding of the impact of the arts to raise awareness, effect change, and improve the quality of life for their communities. Students in this learning community regularly attend on- and off-campus arts events as a group.

Global Citizenship Community

The Global Citizenship community appeals to students who enjoy learning about other cultures and who intend to spend part of their Loyola experience studying abroad. Global Citizenship students will engage with each other and with the broader Loyola and Chicago communities to discover how to honor, respect, and enrich our global society by exploring different languages, cultures, and ways of life.

Green Community

This community will explore the many different ways college students can live a green lifestyle. Participants will be able to make a large impact on the Loyola community by minimizing their impact on the environment around us. They will also have the opportunity to be leaders by educating others on new trends in green communities.

Ignation Leadership Community

The Ignatian Leadership community is well-suited for students interested in learning how they can serve the world and provide service to others an in a collaborative environment. Students in this community also explore and deepen their personal values by studying the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and will learn about issues related to justice, service, and seeing God in all things.

Pre-Health Community

This learning community is an ideal fit for first-year students intending to explore a pre-health related curriculum at Loyola. This community strives to foster academic success in the challenging disciplines of biology and chemistry.

  • CHEM 111 - General Chemistry Lab
  • UNIV 101 - First Year Seminar

Psychology Community

Students in this learning community will have the opportunity to become familiar with the many studies of human behavior and explore the variety of ways in which psychology is applied to the world today.

Social Justice Village

The Social Justice Village is a learning community of students who are deeply committed to developing their understanding of diversity and multiculturalism. They have a passion for critically analyzing systems of social injustice in local, national, and global contexts. Exploring the histories of various social movements and the cycle of liberation, students seek to become influential agents of social change at Loyola and beyond.
