WHEN IN ROME

With so much to do in Rome, it's no wonder they call it the Eternal City. Apply to the John Felice Rome Center today, and we'll send you a full set of Explore cards with helpful tips like the ones below:

  • Directions: When asking for or offering directions, describe the location by the nearest landmark--don't say north, south, east, or west.
  • Currency: Small retailers often won't accept credit cards, so have a few Euros on hand.
  • IDs: Always bring some sort of identification with you, but leave your passport back on campus (it's too easy to lose and too hard to get back).
  • Sunglasses: Shades are a must-have, year-round accessory.
  • Soccer: The fastest way to start a conversation is soccer. Brush up on Rome's two major teams, SS Lazio and AS Roma.
  • Dining: Keep it classy with these dos and don'ts:

    • Real Italians don't drink cappuccino after noon.
    • It's common practice to arrive at least 15 minutes "fashionably late" for dinner reservations.
    • Don't expect butter or olive oil served with bread.
    • Students typically aren't expected to tip. Still, go the extra mile and leave one Euro per person at your table.
  • Cover-ups: Men and women are required to cover their knees and shoulders when entering many Catholic churches. Leave short shorts and tank tops at the hotel, or bring a shawl or jacket for a quick fix.
