Scholarships

The John Felice Rome Center (JFRC) offers various awards exclusively for JFRC students, thanks to generous alumni-benefactors. Excepting the Vogel Scholarship and the Weinig Traveling Fellowship, which require recommendations and a lengthier essay, scholarship applicants will be considered for all other awards listed for which they may be eligible. Please note eligibility requirements for each award.  

The Scholarship Application Form and the JFRC Scholarship Recipient Biography Form must be filled out in order for an applicant to be awarded any JFRC scholarship..  The usual procedure is to file the application form with the essay by the deadline and to submit the online biographical form on the notification date when an applicant becomes a recipient. No award will be issued until the online JFRC Scholarship Recipient Biography Form has been submitted.  


All application materials should be sent to the following address:  Loyola University Chicago, The John Felice Rome Center, 1032 W. Sheridan Road, Sullivan Center 206, Chicago, IL 60626.  Materials should not be faxed nor sent via e-mail; materials sent by fax or e-mail will not be considered.  It is the student's responsibility to make sure all materials are received in the Chicago Office for the JFRC by 5:00 pm Central Time on the deadline date.    

Scholarship applications should only be submitted within a six-week window; this window opens on a date six weeks prior to a deadline and closes on the deadline date itself.

The Murel R. Vogel, S.J. Endowed Scholarship                                           Academic Year


In tribute to the care and concern shown to JFRC students by the late Father Murel Vogel, a Jesuit priest who spent many years at the Center, a benefactor's generosity enables a full-year student to receive a scholarship covering tuition, fees, room & board, transportation (airfare, rail passes, etc), and a monthly stipend while studying at the JFRC.

This award will be $45,000 for the 2009-10 academic year.

Eligibility: Prior acceptance to the JFRC for the academic year.

Requirements: Submission of an individualized essay of no more than 4 typed, double-spaced pages stating how receipt of the scholarship would positively advance the applicant's personal and career growth, two written recommendations from adults not related to the applicant who have known him/her for more than 3 years, a CV or resume specifically detailing the candidate's non-academic (work and/or volunteer) activities, and a completed Scholarship Application (PDF).  Finalists may be asked for a personal or telephone interview.

 

The Weinig Traveling Fellowship                                                                             Fall    

Through the generosity of the Weinig Foundation, which over the years has provided $120,000 in fellowships to qualified JFRC undergraduates, three traveling fellowships of $2,000 each will be awarded for the Fall semester 2009.  Weinig Traveling Fellowships may be used only for travel to and from the JFRC and travel during the semester of study abroad.

Eligibility: Acceptance for study at the JFRC and classification as a junior or senior.

Requirements:  Scholarship application (PDF) with the second page completed by a Financial Aid Administrator at the home institution, one letter of recommendation from an individual of your choice, and submission of an personal essay on "travel as a learning experience" of no more than 4 typed, double-spaced pages. The essay should also include a description of how you will document and share your travel experience with other students and with Prof. and Mrs. Weinig.  For example, you may keep a journal, make a video, take photographs, draw sketches or write poetry or music. You are also encouraged to outline your tentative travel plans in your essay. Finalists may be asked for a personal or telephone interview.

The John P. and Mary K. Felice Endowed Scholarship                                       Fall / Spring


Alumni and friends of the JFRC recognize, through this endowment, the immeasurable contributions of the late John Paul Felice, founder and original director, and his widow, Mary Kate Felice. The Felice Scholarships provide financial relief for tuition and academic expenses.

Felice Scholarships (up to $2,500 each) may be awarded to full-year students as well as to  Fall-only or Spring-only students.  The award is a single-semester scholarship, and receipt of it in Fall semester does not guarantee receipt in a subsequent Spring term.

Eligibility: GPA of 3.2 or better, financial need or qualification for need (application on file with FAFSA), and prior acceptance to the JFRC.


  

 

The Vogelheim --- Hansen Scholarship                                                        Fall / Spring   

Through the generosity of the Katie Vogelheim (JFRC alumna 1977-78), John Hansen, and the John and Kate Hansen Family Foundation, the Vogelheim - Hansen Scholarships encourages students from all financial backgrounds to apply to study at the JFRC.  The scholarship will help to ensure that the JFRC remains financially accessible to a diverse student population.

Vogelheim - Hansen Scholarships vary between $3,000 and $10,000; students who are studying at the JFRC for the full academic year will receive priority, although all eligible students will be considered and are strongly encouraged to apply.  This award will provide financial relief for tuition and academic expenses.

Eligibility:  Financial need (application on file with FAFSA) or qualification for need and prior acceptance to the JFRC.  




 

Carol T. Robbins Visiting Student Scholarship                                  Academic Year / Fall


In demonstration of her commitment to the JFRC and its students, JFRC alumna Carol Robbins has created a scholarship endowment to enable visiting students from universities and colleges throughout the United States to attend the John Felice Rome Center. 

For Fall 2009 term / full-year 2009-10, one Carol T. Robbins Visiting Student Scholarship in an amount between $5,000 and $7,500 will be awarded to a visiting student .  This award will provide relief for tuition and academic charges and a portion may be used towards study trips while in Rome. 

Eligibility: Visiting student (i.e. non Loyola-Chicago) from any college or university, financial need (application on file with FAFSA) or qualification for need and prior acceptance to the JFRC.

The JFRC Alumni Class Scholarships                                                                    Fall / Spring


To continue the legacy and transformational opportunities of the JFRC for future generations, several individual JFRC classes from the Center's first thirty academic years have generously contributed to create JFRC Alumni Class Scholarships.  Recognizing the important impact a term or year at the JFRC had on their lives, through the Alumni Class Scholarships the JFRC alumni are proud to help provide students with the opportunity from which they themselves so greatly benefited. 

Awards range from approximately $1,000 to $5,000 and are determined by need.  This award will provide relief for tuition and related academic charges.

Many thanks to all the JFRC alumni who make these scholarships possible. Special thanks for the inaugural awards of Fall 2008 go to the alumni classes of 1965-66, 1966-67,1968-69, 1975-76, 1976-77.

Eligibility:  Financial need (application on file with FAFSA) or qualificiation for need and prior acceptance to the JFRC.

Scholarship Deadline for students admitted to the JFRC for Spring term 2010:                               Friday, October 30, 2009  (Submission window = September 18 - October 30)

Notification Date to Spring 2010 recipients: Friday, November 20, 2009

Scholarship Deadline for students admitted to the JFRC for Fall 2010 or for Full-Year 2010-2011: Tuesday, June 1, 2010 (Submission window = April 20 - June 1)

Notification Date to Fall 2010 and Full-Year 2010-2011 recipients: Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Requirements for all except the Vogel Scholarship / Weinig Fellowship:  Scholarship application (PDF) with the second page completed by a Financial Aid Administrator at the home institution and submission of a one-page essay illustrating how you will take full advantage of your JFRC experience.  The essay should focus on three aspects: 1) What specific benefits you expect from your study at the JFRC. 2) What impact this scholarship may have on your plans to study abroad. 3) How your presence at the JFRC will enhance the campus community.  Your essay should also address how you plan to pay for your tuition, fees, room, board and other expenses while you are in Rome for a semester or year (will you use loans, other scholarships, money saved up, etc.?)    Finalists may be asked for a personal or telephone interview.

In order for a recipient to claim an award, the JFRC Scholarship Recipient Biography must be submitted online.

NOTE: Recipients of Fall 2009 and full-year 2009-2010 awards were notified by e-mail on Friday, June 26, 2009, as to which award and the specific amount of the award they were offered.  A recipient's filing of the above biographical form will be considered his or her acceptance of the scholarship or fellowship.

FORTHCOMING AWARDS

The Anthony and Susan Brazier Piazza Scholarship                                        Fall / Spring

In an effort to encourage more students to attend the John Felice Rome Center and experience first hand this life-changing study abroad program, Susan (JFRC alumna Spring 63) and Anthony Piazza (JFRC alumnus 1962-63) have generously endowed a new scholarship fund. The Anthony and Susan Brazier Piazza Scholarship Fund will provide partial scholarship to one or more students that attend the JFRC.

This award is projected to be available for the Fall of 2010 or after.  A scholarship of up to $4,000 will be awarded to a single student for a semester of study at the JFRC.

Eligibility: Financial need or qualification for need (application on file with FAFSA), and prior acceptance to the JFRC.
