9/11 Commemoration Ceremony

Guest Speaker: Ambassador Ertharin Cousin

 September 13, 2011

Ambassador Cousin’s visit was part of a larger schedule of events that was initiated with a candlelight vigil and a special Memorial Mass concelebrated by our chaplain and assistant chaplain, Fr. Albert Anuszewski and Fr. John Chandler held two days before on the night of September 11th, exactly ten years from the terrorist attacks in the U.S. that profoundly impacted the world over.

In light of the Jesuit traditions of being men and women for others and educating with an all-encompassing and diverse education, Ambassador Cousin related her work with United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture, then and now. The Ambassador spoke about the need for solidarity, a need she expressed has only become more and more noticeable after the fateful events of 9/11.

Ambassador Cousin spoke of the changes to the world community which occurred as a result of 9/11 as well as her current area of work that deals with world hunger and food sustainability for the future. She also spent a significant time going into detail about current programs and the goals established by the United States and European countries in an effort to eliminate hunger and help developing countries.

At the end of her speech, the Ambassador left time for questions. One of these questions was regarding how students could help in Rome and at home to help to fight hunger. The Ambassador informed the students that there is a “Run for Food” on October 16th that all are welcome to join. The Ambassador even promised an American style BBQ if the school decided to participate in the run. There was also a suggestion by a faculty member to stay in touch with the Ambassador so that the JFRC and the Ambassador can work together, specifically regarding Hunger Week.
