Ostia Antica

September 28th: SLAs Russell Gonzalez and Chandni Patel led by Prof. John Nicholson

Students inside the ruins

The time-honored study trip to Ostia Antica and the Catacombs took place this fall on the beautiful Roman Saturday of September 28th. In his 45th year of teaching at the John Felice Rome Center, Dr. John Nicholson guided forty students with SLAs Russell and Chandni through the old archeological ruins of the former industrious Roman port city of Ostia. Situated at the mouth of the Tiber River during ancient times, Ostia Antica now lays next to the Tiber due to silting over the ages. After the tour, the group visited the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. Students had the opportunity to visit the underground cemeterial complex of martyrs, popes and many Christians during a guided tour. That evening, participants dressed to impress and attended an aperitivo reception at Parco Massimi, a new resort and restaurant in Monte Mario.
