Pre-Departure

Auguri!  You have been accepted to the John Felice Rome Center!  Now it is time to take action and prepare yourself for your time in Rome.

Once you have been accepted to the JFRC please follow these steps:

NOTE:  You will receive a series of e-mails with the following information

  1. All Students: Return to your online application.  Confirm your acceptance by clicking the box next to the "intent to enroll"

  2. All Students: Once you have confirmed your "intent to enroll" you will be prompted to complete the following pre-departure documents through the online application system:  

    • Housing Contract
    • Medical History Form
    • Health Insurance  ***All students are required to purchase international health insurance.  See Travel Center
    • Flight Itinerary - Semester students can wait to purchase their flight itinerary if they would like to wait for more information about a group flight from Chicago.
  3. Semester and Full Year Students: Apply for Scholarships(Note: scholarship deadlines)

  4. All Students: If you have not done so already, speak to a Financial Aid advisor and check out our Financial Resources.

  5. Semester Students: Purchase a flight independently or learn about our group flight option.  (Semester students will receive an email notificaiton about a group flight from Chicago.)

  6. Summer Students: Purchase a flight.  (There are no group flights for the summer)
  7. Loyola Chicago Students: Attend the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation.  You will be notified via email of the date, time and location.  Loyola students who fail to attend will be withdrawn from the JFRC.

  8. Visiting Students:  Learn your University ID (UVID) and How to Login to Loyola University Chicago's online systems. (LOCUS - Loyola Online Connection to University Services)
  9. All Students: Register for Classes.

  10. Summer Students only: Purchase your books.  (Semester students will purchase books on campus in Rome).

  11. Semester and Full Year Non-EU Citizen Students: Apply for a Study Visa (NOTE: You do not need a study visa if you are an EU citizen)
  12. Summer Students:  If you are an EU or US citizen you do not need a Study Visa for the summer.  All other students should check with the Italian Consulate to learn how to apply for a study visa.

  13. Visiting Students: If you have questions or want to learn more about your experience in Rome for a JFRC Representative check to see if we are visiting your home institution campus. 

  14. All Students: Make copies of the following important documents:

    • Two (2) complete, legible copies of your ENTIRE passport including both front and back cover. You will also need to copy the stamped page of your passport once you arrive into the country at the JFRC.

    • Two (2) separate copies of the passport picture page and visa page (we suggest you scan these two pages and email them to yourself as well).

    • Two (2) copies of the letter from the Office for International Programs and the Italian Consulate, failure to bring this may result in dismissal from the program.

    • Four (4) Passport sized photos (can be done at CVS or Walgreen’s, among other places)

    • Two (2) copies of your international health insurance coverage

  15. All Students: Prepare yourself for departure.  Read through the links below before going to Rome: Health and Safety, Pre-Departure Handbook, Packing Guide, and Medications Abroad.

Health and Safety Guidelines: Check with your family physician regarding health care, immunizations and precautions. Review the  guidelines prior to departure.

JFRC Pre-Departure Handbook  In this handbook you will find information about finances, health, safety, travel and other topics related to your study abroad experience. Please look it over and use it as a resource before traveling to Rome and while you are in Rome. If you have any questions about the handbook, feel free to contact a JFRC Representative at rome@luc.edu or a JFRC SLA at RomeSLA@luc.edu.  

Packing Guide In this guide you will find advice on what you will need to bring with you to Rome so that you can begin packing your bags!  Remember to check with your airline to learn about bag and weight limits so you don't spend more money than you need to!

Medication Abroad  Check with your physician regarding your prescription drugs.  Read through this link for advice from our Rome team.
