What is a Student Life Assistant?

The Office of the Associate Director for Student Life welcomes students from all over the United States and eases their adjustment to a new culture, a new language and a new learning experience. The Associate Director for Student Life, Todd Waller, is assisted by the current staff of Student Life Assistants, each of whom, having graduated from college and having lived in Rome, is a mature, invaluable resource to students. Student Life Assistants for the 2008-2009 academic year:

  • The responsibility of this office extends to all facets of student life outside the immediate concerns of the Academic Director's Office. Under the direction of the Associate Director for Student Life, the Rome Center provides such general university services as counseling and guidance, housing, health and food services, recreation and student activities.

  • The special character of the Rome Center program, however, adds another dimension to the function of the Associate Director for Student Life, namely, the enrichment of the student's foreign study experience. Advice is given about the adventures of life in a foreign country and use of a foreign language, travel, exploration of the European historical and artistic heritage, and an appreciation of cultural differences.

    This office also assists students in obtaining their residency permits (permessi di soggiorno) from the police (questura) and plans co-curricular activities. The Associate Director for Student Life provides guidance to students and the student life staff in organizing social and cultural events, such as lectures on Italian life and culture and exchange socials with Italian students. This office also moderates the Rome Center's newsletter, Ciao Roma, and the yearbook which chronicles the events and friendships of this study-abroad experience. Students are invited to take advantage of these services. They are intended to contribute to the depth and appreciation of the study abroad experience.

    Qualifications to be an SLA

    • Applicants must be college graduates.
    • Applicants must be available for the entire undergraduate academic year and through the summer sessions in Rome (August 10, 2009 - July 17, 2010).
    • Conversational proficiency in Italian is minimally required; fluency is preferred.
    • Proven leadership and programming skills are required.
    • Prior attendance at the Rome Center during an academic year is mandatory.
    • Prior resident assistant or housing staff experience is preferred.
    • A clean disciplinary record during an applicant's tenure at the Rome Center is mandatory.

    Remuneration

    • Academic year stipend of €12,000, supplemented by variable summer stipend averaging 3,600
    • Room & board for the period of service in Rome (board only while cafeteria is operating).
    • One round-trip airline ticket from Chicago to Rome and back to Chicago.
    • American and Italian health insurance coverage. Coverage year in USA is August 1, 2009 - July 31, 2010.
    • Tuition compensation for six semester hours per semester of Rome Studies 381.

    Application

    To apply for the student life assistant position, download and complete the Student Life Assistant Application (PDF). Please be as thorough and detailed as possible when filling out the application. It will be the primary basis for the selection of the short list of candidates. Candidates must also submit three letters of recommendation.

    1. One letter must come from a faculty member who has taught you.
    2. The second letter must come from either your residence life supervisor or from your supervisor at work.
    3. The third letter should come from a member of the university community who knows you personally.

    The deadline for receipt of all application materials is Monday, March 2, 2009.

    Selection Process

    Once the Rome Center office has received your application and all three letters of recommendation, the materials will be forwarded to Rome for review by the selection committee. Candidates on the short list will be interviewed by telephone or in person. Appointments will be announced by Todd Waller, Associate Director for Student Life at the John Felice Rome Center, no later than Monday, May 4, 2009.
