The Certificate in Graphic Design is a non-degree course of study for anyone interested in learning design concepts, improving design skills, or exploring the rapidly changing area of design and computer graphics. The certificate offers both conceptual and technological training needed to pursue a career in the field and is suitable to returning students with or without college experience or art backgrounds. Traditional undergraduate degree-seeking students are not eligible for this program.
Students admitted to this program enroll in fifteen-week courses through the Department of Fine and Performing arts. Courses are available during the day and evening at the Lake Shore and Water Tower campuses.

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
Students complete the following six courses (eighteen credit hours) of undergraduate coursework:
Two-Dimensional Design
Visual Communications I, II, III
Computer Graphics I, II
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
FNAR 112: TWO-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (3)
A fundamental exploration of the formal systems and basic elements of visual organization through two-dimensional design principles and theories using a variety of media.
FNAR 132: VISUAL COMMUNICATION I (3)
This course initiates a professional sequence whereby the student receives an introduction to typography and the use of two dimensional design principles necessary for visual communication.
FNAR 232: VISUAL COMMUNICATION II (3)
A continued study of the visual and conceptual principles introduced in 132 set in a strong historical context.
FNAR 233: COMPUTER GRAPHICS I (3)
Introduction to the Macintosh computer as a tool in graphic design. The three industry standard software programs are introduced as a vehicle for learning basic design concepts and creative expression.
FNAR 332: VISUAL COMMUNICATION III (3)
A continued study of the principles underlying graphic design combined with an emphasis on the communicative power of typography and image.
FNAR 333: COMPUTER GRAPHICS II (3)
In-depth exploration of advanced concepts and techniques in digital imagery and illustration development. Includes introduction to digital multimedia, animation, and interactivity.
FACULTY
The faculty draws from diverse areas of expertise in typography, design, business management, and computer software skills. Nicole Ferentz [MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago] and Michel Balasis [MFA, Michigan State University] form the core visual communications faculty, joined by adjunct professors Mary Kennedy [MFA, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee] and Bridget Gannon [MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago].
TUITION
Certificate students pay $560 per credit hour. Most courses are three credit hours, with the exception of a few math courses. Please double check the credit hours for each course.
