ABOUT SCPS
Launched in Spring 2006, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) at Loyola University Chicago continues a long tradition of unwavering support for working adults who wish to advance their education. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies continues in the Jesuit tradition by providing application-oriented programs and certificates that prepare working professionals for today's dynamic workplace. At the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, we prepare people to lead extraordinary lives.
SCHOOL HISTORY
For more than 100 years, Loyola University Chicago has fulfilled its mission of educational outreach and inclusiveness by offering a wide range of educational options to a diverse community of students and professionals.
Loyola University Chicago has maintained a long practice of supporting the educational goals of adult and other "non-traditional" students. Over the years, these academic programs have been housed in discrete Schools within the institution. Adult students were first welcomed to Loyola in the School of Sociology (1914-1927), founded by Frederic Siedenburg, S.J.; this School then became known as the Downtown College (1927-1936). University College (1936-1991) continued the institution's commitment to adult students.
In 1991, when Loyola acquired Mundelein College, University College was renamed "Mundelein College of Loyola University" (1991-2003). Significantly, Mundelein had become well known for its innovations in adult learning, having created the first "Weekend College for Women" in the country.
Under the leadership of President Michael Garanzini, S.J., a renewed commitment emerged to meet the needs of non-traditional students, and the University relocated its adult evening programs to the School of Professional Studies (2003-2006).
In 2006, the School modified its name to the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS), inserting "continuing education" as a term broadly recognized to signify a place of learning for those outside of the traditional scope. SCPS now offers programs for adults completing their undergraduate degrees, along with a program of non-credit courses for professional development and lifelong learning called Continuum. SCPS manages the University's Summer Session, including a program for qualified high school students, Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars, and has expanded its program offerings to focus on the area of Women's Leadership and Allied Health.
