Video-Conferenced between LSC, LUMC, and WTC
TO: Members of the Academic Affairs University Policy Committee (AAUPC)
FROM: Patricia Beattie Jung, AAUPC Member
DATE: May 19, 2007
Members Present: Janice Rasheed (Chair), Patti Jung, Samuel Attoh,John Makowski, Donna Halinski, Matthew Brooks
Members Absent: Kari Hamende, Alanah Fitch, Linda Paskiewicz, John Pelissero, Jack Wall, Matthew Willms
The meeting CALLED TO ORDER at 10:00 A.M.
- Minutes of previous meeting will be distributed by email when available.
- Motion to TABLE the SSWDD Participation Accommodation Guidelines: APPROVED unanimously by those present. (M. WIllms voted in absentia to approve the proposal, noting that 25% accommodation seemed high.)
- The AAUPC would like the policy amended so that (1) in addition to nursing clinicals, other departments could specify that certain courses (labs, internships etc.) are excluded from this accommodation policy, and (2) SSWD would verify that absences were due to disability.
- The AAUPC would like more information about what data was collected re “best practices” in this regard. What sort of accommodation do our benchmark institutions make? The acceptance of absences for up to 35% of class sessions seemed unacceptably high to many.
- More information about the rationale for this policy is requested.
- Motion to TABLE the SBA Reinstatement Proposal: APPROVED unanimously by those present. (M. Willms voted in absentia to abstain.)
- No one present to represent proposal.
- The AAUPC would like to know why the current structure did not work. Why did it fail to foster interdisciplinary collaboration? How will the return to the old structures help?
- Motion to APPROVE an interdisciplinary Masters in Urban Affairs and Public Policy: APPROVED unanimously by those present. (M. Willms voted in absentia to approve.)
- David Merriman presented the proposal.
- The Director of the program in the Graduate School was encouraged to explore the interconnections between this MA and LUC’s graduate programs in Public Health, Nursing and Social Work.
- It was noted that resolving the issues re sharing revenues will be critical to making this program viable.
- The proposal was commended (by Jung) for the inclusion of an ethics requirement. She noted that Theology faculty (Drs. French, Schuck and Vigen might be interested in teaching the Ethics and Economic Justice course.)
- Jung also noted that the Theology Department frequently offers graduate courses in the areas of Church/State, Religion and Politics, Biomedical Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Social Justice and Economic Justice that could serve as electives to this program. She volunteered to send the coordinator of this program a listing of these.
- Those present decided that it would be acceptable to discuss via email matters that have been tabled.
- There was a conversation about addressing new proposals over the summer.
- It was noted by Jung that the deadline for the presentation of new programs etc was long past. In the past the committee did not meet during the summer. Still, the need for review may be urgent/great.
- She also mentioned that new AAUPC members should be rotating onto the committee around August 15th, presuming service on the committee is tied to the AY. If it is a year round commitment, then the “transition” date should probably be July 1st.
- Jung recommended that Janice contact the UCC about these procedural and membership matters
Motion to ADJOURN: APPROVED unanimously by all present. 11:20 AM.
