A. Wayne Magdziarz opened the meeting at 2:00 p.m. The minutes of the February 6 meeting were approved.

B. Magdziarz gave an update on the sustainability initiative which was presented at the February meeting. He indicated that Nancy Tuchman has met with LUMC to begin a University wide approach to sustainability. LUMC is interested in pursuing possibilities but to date has not committed to collaborating on the project. President Garanzini has committed $40,000 for an initial assessment of the Lakeside campuses as the first phase of this sustainability project.

C. Dean Jalilvand then presented the strategic plan of the School of Business (appended to these minutes). He began by discussing the internal and external climates impacting the SOB from the mid 1990’s to early 2000. Dean Jalilvand stated that a strategic plan was developed in 2005 to help the SOB move forward with a vision rooted in the Jesuit mission, focusing on excellent scholarship and developing responsible business leaders.

D. Highlights of the plan include: increasing the level of research active faculty from 50% to 75%; hiring 14 new tenure track positions; increasing revenues for the SOB; following a hiring strategy that relies on 1) industry partnerships, 2) Centers of Excellence, and 3) retaining a critical mass of research productive faculty; enhancement of the undergraduate student experience by the creation of an honors program; the creation of a two-year daytime MBA program; and targeted MBA programs such as the health care and financial services programs which will allow Loyola to compete more effectively in Chicago. Dean Jalilvand indicated that Loyola is ranked number 16 out of 425 part-time MBA programs. The strategic plan has a goal of securing a place in the top 50 o f full-time MBA programs within five years.

E. In response to a variety of questions, Dean Jalilvand indicated that the SOB has a goal to reach 100% job placement within six months by requiring internships, bringing more employers to Loyola, and improving career placement services. He added that the SOB will continue to offer courses at the Rome Center and Beijing Center. The School has recently entered into an agreement for a cooperative program with a Jesuit university in India as well. By March 2008, the SOB intends to 1) hire new faculty endowed chairs to assist in the development of Centers of Excellence; 2) have 100% placement of undergraduate students in internships; and 3) have secured a name for the School.

F. John Frendreis commented further that the SOB would like to be the top Jesuit SOB in the AJCU network, the best undergraduate program in Chicago, and the best graduate program in niche areas in Chicago. Dean Jalilvand commented that currently Boston College and Georgetown are both considered the best SOB in the AJCU network and that Notre Dame is perhaps better than both AJCU schools.

G. Dean Yellen then pre sented the strategic plan of the Law School (appended to these minutes). The Law School just completed a successful reaccreditation visitation from the ABA. Highlights of the plan include: moving into the top 50 rank of law schools within the next five to eight years; growing the number of endowed chairs from zero to six in the next five years; enhanced investment in three Centers of Excellence (Health Law Center, CIVITAS and Center for Advocacy); increasing experiential learning in the first year of law school; and improving the raw space and design of the Law School.

H. In response to a variety of questions, Dean Yellen indicated that the School currently is planning summer courses for Rome and other European cities. There will be programs offered in Beijing beginning in the summer 2008 as well as a January session in London. Relationships have also been established in Chile, Thailand and Tanzania to explore potential course offerings. Additionally, there is a concerted effort to increase student diversity in the School. By March 2008, the Law School intends to 1) have secured several more major gifts and added one endowed chair; 2) have made significant progress on curricular reform; 3) have achieved a rankings boost; and 4) have continued growth of scholarly productivity.

I. Magdziarz adjourned the meeting at 3:15 p.m.
