John Goheen joined the School of Communication faculty in Fall 2009 as instructor, teaching Introduction to Video, and Video Documentary fall semester.

In April 2011 Goheen was awarded  the Best of Festival King Foundation Award in the Faculty News Competition, for a piece entitled "Vietnam Scooter Culture  at the Broadcast Education Association's Festival of Media Arts for faculty news, the faculty documentary.

Goheen said “It came about when I visited my son who is a commercial airline pilot for a new airline in Vietnam, Air Mekong.  I visited him during last year's Fall Break.  The timing was good for a quick trip and while there I was looking to produce a short piece for HDNet (the High Definition television network owned by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban).  The piece aired on a program called World Report.”

Goheen shoot a documentary on the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. In this photo a Haitian boy how to hold and operate a video camera.
Goheen currently is producing a film entitled, A Day in the Life of America’s Veterans 11.11.11. The project will be filmed entirely on Veteran’s Day by various photojournalists located throughout the world.

Goheen, who is a veteran himself, is producing the documentary to share the compelling stories of American veterans. Although the U.S. is in the midst of two wars, Goheen believes the contributions of servicemen and servicewoman are often “overlooked.”

“I just felt, as the wars continued on, that the public interest in them [dwindled],” Goheen says. “I felt that was unfair to all these men and women who served in these wars.”
So far, more than 50 still and video photojournalists have volunteered to shoot footage for the 90-minute documentary. Due to time restraints, not every individual will have his or her work featured in the film, but Goheen hopes for the project to establish a long-term web presence where additional footage can be accessed.

A documentary filmmaker, Goheen screened portions of his film "El Viejo Norte" (The Journey North) as part of SoC's Faculty Speaker series to students and faculty in Putting a Face on Immigration. The film documents the journey of a Mexican family planning to head north to America in search of work.

A 12-time Emmy winner, he has spent a long career in television news working for stations such as KMGH-TV in Denver, KOMO-TV in Seattle, and KUTV in Salt Lake City.  He has also worked as a free lance producer and photographer for Dateline NBC, ESPN, the BBC, and 60 Minutes, to name but a few.

Goheen has been honored three times with the most prestigious award a video photojournalist can receive, the National Press Photographer’s Association Television News Photographer of the Year. As an independent filmmaker John has also won a dozen awards from festivals such as the Denver International Film Festival, the Phoenix International Film Festival, and the Santa Fe Film Festival.
