The clinical practicum is uniquely tailored to meet the advanced learning needs of doctoral students. Each practicum individualizes the doctoral student's area of clinical interest and includes a location (typically a social service agency, mental health outpatient department or a psychiatric hospital), a preceptor and a faculty liaison.
In the metropolitan Chicago area, numerous relationships already exist between SSW's doctoral program and sites for practica. The following represents a brief sampling: Northwestern University Memorial Hospital, Michael Reese Hospital, Wilmette Family Service, Winnetka Family Service, Oak Park and River Forest Family Service, and the Student Counseling Department at the University of Chicago. While more difficult to arrange, out-of-state practica have been established for every doctoral student whether in Wisconsin (e.g., Milwaukee Mt. Sinai Hospital Outpatient Department); in Michigan (Counseling Associates, Southfield); in Indiana (Insight Center, Indianapolis); and in St. Louis, Missouri.
It is occasionally possible to use the same out-of-state preceptor/agency on a repeat basis. In all cases, practica development requires detailed application procedures, credentialing of preceptors, monitoring of the internship experience by an SSW doctoral faculty liaison and evaluation.
