Overview

Loyola University Chicago's School of Social Work is pleased to offer a selection of timely professional development opportunities for social workers and other human service workers, including workshops, consultation groups, review courses, conferences, and certificate programs.

The series addresses contemporary clinical, community, and social issues encountered by social workers in practices. Our many choices are supported by the research endeavors of our three institutes: Institute on Aging, Institute on Innovative Practice, and the Institute on Immigration and Migration.

Continuing Education Units
The Professional Development Series at the SSW is a licensed State of Illinois provider of continuing education untits. CEUs are counted as one unit per hour of instruction. Please rememberd to submit your license number to receive your certificate of completion in a timely manner.

Cancellation Policy: Participants must cancel their registration prior to 5 business days of the workshop date in order to receive a refund.

Continuity of Self and Others: Intergenerational Challenges Faced by Aging Families

July 31 - August 3, 2012; 9:00am to 5:00pm

July 31st ~ Saying Goodbye
Morning ~ An original documentary by Dr. Geri Fox
A daughter’s journey with her father over the course of dementia and to the end of his life.

Afternoon ~ The concept of self and other throughout the lifespan.
Ellen Carbonell, MSW, LCSW, from the Alzheimer’s Association will speak about dementia    and the impact on family members.

August 1st ~ Elder care planning: From mediated agreements to geriatric care management-Balancing Responsibility, Obligation, and Values
Morning ~ Learning the basics of a conceptual model of mediation and family therapy in      creating elder care plans. Geriatric case management & Caregiver support

Afternoon ~ Recognition and resolution of discontinuities created by the challenges experienced in aging families, including challenges to caregivers.

August 2nd ~ Issues in Immigrant Families: Crossing Cultures & Generations
Morning ~ A panel presentation:
Professionals representing diverse groups will discuss relationships between the generations and issues that arise in aging families.

Afternoon ~ Balancing identity, traditions, and the enduring sense of self. Researchers and project directors of programs on diversity.

August 3rd ~ Loss Across the Generations: Building Capacity for Resilience
Morning ~ A workshop presented by Holly Nelson-Becker to identify the nature of varying loss, offer tools for assessment, and discuss capacity and strategies for working through grief.

Afternoon ~ This section will focus on the potential of self throughout the lifespan. Creative arts and resilience
