Summer 2015 Course Offerings in Milan and Rome

In Milan, Italy – at UNIVERSITA’ DI MILANO BICOCCA

SOWK 634: Ageing Society and Social Work: Challenges and Solutions from Three Continents, Dr. John Orwat

This 3-credit course will be held at the University of Milan-Bicocca and offered in cooperation with Huazhong Agriculture University, Loyola University Chicago, and Università della Calabria. The course will bring together students and faculty from China, Italy, and the US to discuss problems arising from a rapidly ageing population and its potential impact on social services. The seminar will be held in the framework of the EXPO Milan 2015 which is dedicated to the topic of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life."

In Rome, Italy – at LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO'S JOHN FELICE ROME CENTER

SOWK 617: Principles and Interventions in Clinical Social Work, Dr. Christie Mason

SOWK 603: Brief Treatment, Dr. Michael Kelly

These complementary advanced practice courses will be offered consecutively in a two-week period, giving students the opportunity to complete 6 credits of coursework while studying in the rich cultural setting of Loyola’s John Felice Rome Center.  

Students in SOWK 617 will be introduced to an evidence-informed practice process that teaches them how to apply the best available evidence to assist their clients, with special attention to treating disorders categorized in the DSM-5.

Building off of SOWK 617, SOWK 603 will expose students to the latest evidence for effective brief clinical treatments in social work practice, including practical, “how to” ideas about specific brief treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and motivational interviewing.

These courses will use field trips and guest speakers in and around Rome to make the course content come alive.
