The School of Social Work will again be offering a study abroad course in Calabria, Italy this summer titled Social Work in a globalizing world: Voices and experiences from four continents. The course includes a week in Calabria (May 26th through May 31st, returning June 1st). Classroom seminars will include students from Milan, Calabria and Russia in addition to Loyola students. Specifics of the course are pending but students should anticipate that there will be readings and assignment both before and following the trip. In addition to classroom seminars, week field visits, and meeting students and faculty from a number of different countries including Italy, Russia, South Africa and India have been included during the week.

Students will stay in a residence hall at the University of Calabria. The University of Calabria, situated in Southern Italy (in Calabria near the town of Cosenza, about 500 km South of Rome), is a public institution established in 1972. The University of Calabria is a medium-sized university with about 36,000 students. Since its very beginning the University of Calabria has clearly set out the strategies for the development of its international dimension.

Dr. John Orwat will be leading the trip and teaching the course associated with this study abroad opportunity. There is a limit of 8 students who can attend this program. Details about the costs beyond tuition and the instructor will be available shortly, but we wanted you to know about this course before registration in case you are interested.

An information session for interested students will take place on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH FROM 5:30 to 6:30 P.M. in the Corboy Law Center, Room 306. If you are unable to attend that meeting, you can email either Dr. Orwat (jorwat@luc.edu) or Susan Grossman (sgrossm@luc.edu) to indicate your interest.
