The Integrative Practice Seminar is designed to be a supportive and integrative seminar which is provided on campus and taken concurrently with the student's experience in a fieldwork agency. The seminar provides an opportunity for students to integrate theoretical material from the classroom (lectures, readings) with social work practice in the field. The seminar is offered to enhance and deepen a student's knowledge and skill base through sharing with peers in a supportive group experience with a focus on challenges and issues in the fieldwork placement.

The Integrative Seminar will meet three times each semester (September, October and November, and February, March and April) for 2 ½ hours at the School of Social Work. There is no extra charge to students for participating in the seminar.

Student must be currently enrolled in SWFI 530 (Fall) and SWFI 531 (Spring), and be taking or have taken SOWK 500-501 and SOWK 503-504.

Student must be currently enrolled in SWFI 630 (Fall) and SWFI 631 (Spring), and have completed a first level placement and all foundation level courses.

Learning Objectives

• The student develops an understanding of generalist social work practice and the relationship between course content and current issues and challenges in the social work profession.
• The student integrates knowledge and concepts of social work ethics and values as well as concepts of human diversity in understanding and reflecting on approaches to intervention.
• The student develops an understanding of the impact of larger systems upon social work clients and ways to influence these systems.
• The student understands the need to utilize research in informing their practice.

• Student appreciates, understands and supports the professional Code of Ethics and integrates these values and principles into his/her practice.
• Student is aware and sensitive to all issues of diversity when working with clients.
• The student understands the value and importance of the client-worker relationship.
• The student is able to identify and advocate for social justice issues in their work as social workers.

• Students are able to think critically regarding the application of appropriate theories to practice situations.
• Students develop self-awareness and a reflective understanding of the helping process.
• Students can discuss and evaluate their practice utilizing input from their supervisors, instructors and peers.
• Students can form and maintain relationships with their clients, assess and implement intervention goals and evaluate outcomes of their work.

This course is taught in a seminar format. The primary objective is to help the student connect their practice skills and experience in the field with the knowledge and theoretical base developed in the foundation courses. Class discussion, case presentations, reading and written assignments will be the primary methods of integration of practice and theory as well as an opportunity for students to reflect on and process their fieldwork experiences.

Policies and Procedures

Students are expected to be present for every session of the seminar. The instructor must be notified in advance of the seminar if the student needs to be excused from that session. Only one excused absence will be allowed before the fieldwork grade is affected. Students are expected to participate fully and constructively in all seminar discussions, having read required reading assignments.

Since much of the seminar will be a discussion of fieldwork experience and case presentations, it is important that all members of the seminar adhere to stringent rules of confidentiality. No information regarding clients may be discussed outside of the seminar. All significant identifying information about clients must be altered when presenting material about a case in the seminar.

A passing grade (P) for the Integrative Practice Seminar will be required in order to receive a passing grade for the fieldwork course. Attendance, participation in class and completion of case presentations and written assignments are required for a passing grade in the seminar.

Any student with special needs should notify the instructor before or after the first session so necessary accommodations can be arranged.
