Certificate Program in Substance Abuse

Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association, Inc. (IAODAPCA) Advanced Accredited Training Program

In January, 2010, Loyola University Chicago’s School of Social Work became an Advanced Accredited Training Program, preparing social work students and practitioners to become Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselors (CADC).

Upon completion of the training program (see below  for program requirements) students are eligible to submit their application to IAODAPCA to take the CADC exam. A passing grade on the exam is required for official CADC certification.

Outline of Program Requirements
* Prior to beginning the training program, students must have completed 125 hours of generalist mental health education.
These hours usually have been met if  the applicant has a Masters degree in Social Work, Counseling, or another mental health profession. Evaluation of transcripts will take place on an individual basis to ensure these hours have been met by previous coursework.
SOWK 722: Introduction to Alcohol and Other Drug Disorders
Foundation content course covering history, pharmacology, etiology, addiction and recovery; prerequisite for two subsequent clinical courses
SOWK 723: Clinical Practice in Addictions
Advanced practice course covering screening, biopsychosocial assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, individual & family practice, client education, and case management and referral
SOWK 724: Group Practice with Substance Abusers
500 hour supervised fieldwork in a licensed AOD treatment program.
Internships take place 2 or 3 days week or in a summer block option until hours are completed.
