Family and Schools Partnership Program Presents:

Creating Peaceful Schools
Saturday, December 3, 2011,  9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Mark Mattaini, DSW

After an introduction to the PEACE POWER strategy, the emphasis in this workshop will be on potential for the use of evidence-based kernels as mechanisms for prevention of antisocial behavior (including violence, bullying, and substance abuse), while constructing cultures of respect and recognition in youth serving organizations. It is often difficult for organizations, particularly in challenging economic times, to implement and maintain comprehensive prevention initiatives. Evidence based kernels (and related behavior vaccines) offer an alternative approach, emphasizing dramatically increasing the incidence of a small number of simple but powerful practices within organizational cultures. Workshop content will include:

· The rational for, and the evidence underlying, the PEACE POWER strategy
· The rationale for and definition of evidence-based kernels and behavior vaccines
· Explanations of a number of particularly powerful kernels with wide applicability
· Discussion of programmatic approaches to support maintenance of kernels
Resources for more information on kernels and behavior vaccines
· Opportunities to share practical methods for implementing kernels in organization settings

Creating Safe Schools for LGBTQ Students
Saturday, February 4, 2012,  9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Prem Pahwa, LCSW

Working with LGBTQ youth requires not only a basic understanding of the various components of sexual orientation and gender identity, but an acute awareness of the impact of one’s beliefs, values, and language. This presentation will help participants reflect on these and begin to create a school culture that fosters safety and respect for LGBTQ youth by enhancing communication among and between staff.  Additionally, we will discuss age appropriate clinical interventions and strategies for effecting systemic change.

How Does the Broken Find the Bone?  Strength Based Interventions for Children and Teens who have Experienced Trauma
Saturday, March 10, 2012,  9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Carol Hayse

Workshop Description: Has a child shared a favorite song or picture with you?  Have you drawn, played games, danced,  shot hoops with a student?   Perhaps you are aware that the use of expressive therapies like these is indicated for children who have experienced  traumatic stress, often called complex trauma.  Complex trauma results from maltreatment, viewing family violence, living in violent communities,  living in chaotic families, and so on.   If you’d like to deepen your knowledge of  the neurophysiology of complex trauma, children’s symptoms, and treatments, please attend.  We will learn and share  treatment interventions you have devised, and create more.   Four facilitators will support you to re-new and re-energize.  Please participate with us!
