SOWK 634 - India Reader

Web-Based Learning - Summer 2008

     

                   

This course compares policy and practice in India and the USA in the field of social work and social development research.  Students will be exposed to a new culture through international developmental work and local non-profit or Non Governmental Organizations in both Mumbai (Western India) and Bangalore (South India) providing an inclusive understanding of the multicultural, multi-religious, social disparity of India.  Students will gain an understanding of the relevant practice interventions used in working with Indian communities.  Changes and relationships promoted by work done with different communities and organizations and how these positively affect clinical practice will be also examined.  In addition, students will learn about the importance of developing an understanding of difference, systems of oppression, and advocacy as necessary components of a responsible clinical practice.

This 1-3-credit hour web-based course will run from June 15, 2008 - July 25, 2008.  All course content and material will be accessible through Blackboard Academic Suite.  There will also be 3 optional live web-based interactions with the expert lecturers throughout the duration of the course.           

Course topics include:  Philosophy of Life in India; Multiculturalism, Migration, and Globalization; Social Development Policy and Planning in Developing Countries; Urban and Rural Community Development; Social Movements and Environment; Women's Studies and Gender in Policy and Practice; Family and Child Welfare Policy Institutions; Theology - Religion in Multi Religious Context; Mental Health and Health Policy, Practice, Institutions; Aging and Caregiving Practices; Legal System and Criminology Studies.

Loyola students can register through LOCUS for SOWK 634-India Reader.      

Scholars not presently enrolled as a graduate student in Loyola's School of Social Work may apply to take a course in the program as a non-degree student.  This status allows for the completion of a course in the MSW program, but does not make one eligible to begin master's studies.  To apply for non-degree status, candidates can submit the following:

-Application form (completed online at www.luc.edu/socialwork).  On the application document, be sure to indicate your application to the MSW program, noting non-degree status.

-1 academic or professional letter of recommendation, submitted online or sent to Jeff Steen at the School of Social Work.

-Original transcripts from undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) studies.  Note that all candidates for non-degree status in the School of Social Work most possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree if applying to take a graduate-level course.

-An abbreviated statement of purpose, submitted through the online application.  In 1-2 paragraphs, describe your past and present academic pursuits and your interest in enrolling in a specific course.
