Disability Awareness Week 2012

disAbility Awareness Week Events

Monday, November 5th

11:30 AM to 1:30 PM: Disability Awareness Fair - CFSU Lobby

Join community agencies, campus offices, and disability awareness organizations in CFSU.  These groups will provide educational information, facts & statistics on disabilities, and resources to raise awareness about disabilities.

7 PM: Wretches and Jabbers - Baumhart 4th floor lounge at the Water Tower Campus

Wretches & Jabberers, two men with autism embark on a global quest to change attitudes about disability and intelligence. Determined to put a new face on autism, Tracy Thresher, 42, and Larry Bissonnette, 52, travel to Sri Lanka, Japan, and Finland. At each stop, they dissect public attitudes about autism and issue a hopeful challenge to reconsider competency and the future.

7 PM: Open Mic Night, Zip’s Lounge in CFSU

Join us for the traditional kick off to Disability Awareness Week. Best Buddies hosts Open Mic Night! All are welcome to perform or watch this fantastic event.

Tuesday, November 6th

12 PM-1:30 PM: Informational Career Lunch - Regis Seminar Room

Hungry for job information? Come meet with Melissa Reihaus from The Sea Glass Group to learn about job recruitment for college students with disabilities in this round table discussion. Jonathan Rosenfield, career advisor from the Career Development Center, will be on hand to provide information about their services. Lunch will be provided.

Wednesday, November 7th

5-7 PM: Social Justice Dinner/Dialogue Presents… Seeing the Ability in DisABILITY

Regis Multipurpose Room at the Lake Shore Campus

Otis is a Buddy Ambassador for the state of Illinois Best Buddies office.  He will share his story of what it was like growing up with a disability of the west side of Chicago.  He will focus on the adversities he had to overcome such as bullying, violence, and difficulties within the schooling system.  Otis will also speak about how being involved with Best Buddies changed his life because they focused on his abilities rather than his disability.

7 PM: Finding Nemo - Baumhart 4th floor lounge at the Water Tower Campus

Have you ever watched Finding Nemo through the lens of ability?  Join us for a great movie and discussion on disability identity and accessibility as it relates to the characters of the movie 'Finding Nemo'.

Thursday, November 8th

7 PM Dr. Paul Wichansky - Bremner Lounge in CFSU

Dr. Paul Wichansky, a motivational speaker with ataxic cerebral palsy, enjoys delivering disability awareness and character development programs across New Jersey and other states. His objective is to educate others on the perspectives and realities of growing up with a handicap, allowing them to develop a better understanding of, and perhaps an appreciation for, people with disabilities.

Friday, November 9th

4 PM Student Panel - Cuneo Hall 109

Join our undergraduate student panelists in a dialogue around gender and disability identity. They will share their unique experiences as students with disabilities at Loyola. They will also speak to their experiences as women with disabilities. All are welcome to attend this event.
