Hoverboard Ban on Loyola's Campuses

Hoverboard

Due to the recent fire concerns surrounding "hoverboards”, Loyola University Chicago has chosen to prohibit the use, storage, and possession of hoverboards, and similar devices typically powered by rechargeable lithium ion batteries, on campus. This includes all campus grounds and facilities at Water Tower, Lake Shore, Maywood, Cuneo, LUREC, and the Rome Center (JFRC).  Students who currently have them should leave them at home over the break period and not bring them back to campus.  Students who received them as gifts this break period should not bring them to campus, and should become informed about fire concerns regarding the batteries that operate the boards.  Below are some links to the problem: Hoverboards Keep Exploding Hoverboard Fires Injuries Cause Safety Concerns

Loyola’s priority is the safety of its community members; mitigating risks to students and property is of critical importance to us.  Until the safety of hoverboards can be better assured, the devices will remain prohibited.  This decision was made in consultation with Loyola's Risk Management, Residence Life, Campus Safety, Student Complex, Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, and Division of Student Development.

Note that this is an update to Loyola's Community Standards.

Thank you for helping keep Loyola's campuses safe.
