Advising

Students are encouraged to visit with a study abroad advisor at the Office for International Programs (OIP), who can help you select an appropriate program, provide more program details, and help guide you through the application process. You may stop by the office during weekly walk-in hours for advising*.

* Students may also schedule an appointment if they are unable to meet during walk-in hours. To schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor, call: 773.508.7706, e-mail: intlcntr@luc.edu.

Information Sessions

The Office for International Programs (OIP) frequently hosts information sessions for students who are interested in studying abroad. These informational sessions offer a chance for students to meet with a representative from OIP and pick up literature about an array of programs. This is a great way for students to find out more about study abroad at Loyola and the first step towards isolating a program that is a perfect fit.

Study Abroad 101

The Office for International Programs offers Study Abroad 101 sessions twice a week throughout the semester. The sessions cover essential study abroad information. Study Abroad 101 will provide students with an opportunity to learn all the basic steps to select the program most appropriate for their particular needs. Students will gain exposure to different topics including: determining eligibility, when to go abroad, academic policies, the application process, cost and financial aid.

Students only have to attend one session...

Eligibility

MountainsInternational students as well as those from the US may take advantage of these programs. Students from a vast majority of majors including the Sciences can participate in study abroad. In order to do so students must meet with their advisors and department chairs to discuss future study abroad plans and how these plans may fit into their degree programs.

In order to be eligible as a candidate for Loyola study abroad programs, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Full time student status
  • 30 hours of graded semester hour credit completed before program begins. (Courses graded Pass/No Pass, AP credit and IB credit cannot count toward the 30 hours.)
  • 2.75 GPA or better at time of departure for program
  • An acceptable academic and disciplinary record (Loyola dean/advisor recommendations) at time of departure for program
  • A positive recommendation from a Loyola faculty member
  • Submission of application materials (and any required deposit/application fee) by the application deadline
  • Study abroad advising appointment at OIP
  • In addition to the above criteria, transfer students currently in their first semester at Loyola may generally participate in a Loyola study abroad program if they meet the following additional requirements:
    • Completion of at least one Fall or Spring Semester (15 credits minimum) at Loyola before participation in a study abroad program (courses graded Pass/No Pass, AP credit and IB credit cannot count toward the 15 hours)
    • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 at their previous institution(s) and at Loyola (checked at time of departure for program)
    • A positive recommendation from a faculty member of a prior college or university (this replaces the above requirement for a faculty recommendation from a Loyola professor)
    • Confirmation from the program provider/overseas partner institution of their willingness to accept new transfer students from Loyola (not all programs may be willing to accept students who have completed only one semester of study at Loyola; Loyola may be able to determine before the student applies whether such a student would be considered.)

Students interested in year or semester programs at the Rome Center: see Rome Center Admission Criteria.

Fees & Financial Aid

Loyola charges a fee for study abroad programs in addition to the program tuition. To determine the fee for your program of interest, please see Fees.

Students should consider whether financial aid will apply toward the study abroad program of interest. Financial aid transfer varies considerably between programs. To learn more about transfering your financial aid to a study-abroad program, contact Rebecca Vrba in the Office of Student Financial Assistance at: 773.508.8328. For more information about program costs, fees and scholarships, see Financial Information.

Transfer of Credit

Grades for courses from all Loyola sponsored study abroad programs are computed into the student's GPA.

Students must meet with their respective academic deans/advisors and department chairs in order to discuss academic coursework abroad, as well as acquire authorizing signatures on the Study Abroad Course Approval forms or by using the Course Approval Database, see Course Approvals. For example, questions about sociology courses should be directed to the sociology department. This is the only way to guarantee full transfer of credit from courses taken abroad.

If students deviate from pre-approved courses while abroad these changes must be communicated to both academic deans and department chairs for re-approval at the beginning of the semester. For more detailed information about this process, contact the Office for International Programs.

Contacting a Returnee

Would you like to speak with a student who has already studied abroad? The Office for International Programs can put you in contact with a Loyola study-abroad returnee who will share his or her experiences with you. For more information, please contact Kelly Heath at: 773.508.3307 or e-mail: kheath2@luc.edu.
