Established in 1874 by an Act of the British Parliament, the University of Adelaide is the third oldest university in Australia. It is located on North Terrace in parklands on the banks of the River Torrens adjacent to the downtown shopping and museum district. The university is modern and innovative, producing three of Australia's eight Nobel Prize winners and many Rhodes scholars. With 15,000 students, including approximately 1,300 international students from seventy countries, the university is small enough to provide personal interaction with teaching staff, and large enough to offer a comprehensive range of courses. One of Australia's "sandstone" (Ivy League) universities, the University of Adelaide was founded and developed as a leading science university. It now offers a particularly strong program in Environmental Science, and its proximity to outback Australia and related course offerings in Environmental Sciences-- complemented by Australian social and cultural studies--enhance students' experience and understanding of the essential features of the country and its people.
