Eligibility

Program Type - Founded in 2003, the IES Amsterdam program offers students four different study opportunities in Amsterdam. Students interested in fine and applied art study can enroll at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and receive personalized instruction in these areas. Music students can enroll at the Amsterdam School of Music for individual and small group instruction in Jazz, Classical and Music Education, theory and performance. Students participating in the University of Amsterdam option can enroll in courses taught in English in the humanities, social sciences, law and economics at the University of Amsterdam. Students in the Pre-Law Certification option enroll in two law-related courses at the University of Amsterdam and the IES course Law, Culture and Society Seminar: Law and Legal Practice in an International and Comparative Perspective.

The City of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of many faces. It is a city of peaceful streets and canals, historic houses and neighborhoods, an exciting, youthful nightlife, and bustling commerce. A business and commercial leader for centuries, Amsterdam is today an important hub of the European Union and the site of corporate headquarters for such international corporations as Phillip's, Heineken, and ABN AMRO.

In the city's museums you can study the works of Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. The Dutch are known for their openness and tolerance which has helped give Amsterdam its reputation as a place for experimentation in the arts, social welfare, environmentalism, and lifestyles. Amsterdam is 35 miles from The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government, and the site of the International Court of Justice. Because Dutch is not frequently studied outside of the Netherlands, mastery of English is a core feature of Dutch education and many people in Amsterdam speak fluent, colloquial English. Dutch universities have also sought to attract international students by offering courses taught in English in a variety of fields. The University of Amsterdam, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and the Amsterdam School of Music offer students the chance to integrate academically and culturally with Dutch students, without prior study of the Dutch language.

Students taking the Fine Arts option attend courses full-time at the Rietveld Academie and/or may also elect to take an additional course in art history or art theory at the University of Amsterdam. Fine arts students will participate in the Dutch language instructional program at the Rietveld Academie. Courses are offered in the following concentrations:

Students taking the music option attend courses full time at the Amsterdam School of Music. Students who study at the Amsterdam School of Music should be strong music performance, composition, theory, or education majors with the motivation and intention to become professional musicians, music scholars, or educators. Students enroll for 15-credits for a full-time semester program. They should expect highly individualized instruction and choose a main subject in which to specialize in one of the following three departments:

Classical Department
Jazz Department
School of Music Department for those going into music education

Within these three departments, courses are available in:

Analysis, Arranging, Art of Teaching, Chamber Music, Composition, Conducting, Continuo Playing and Directing Ensembles, Counterpoint, Drama, Ear Training, Education Theory, Harmonic Analysis of the Piano, Music and Social History (History of Western Music), Orchestra or Ensemble Projects

When studying at the University of Amsterdam, students should anticipate that faculty expect greater responsibility and initiative in a much less structured environment than at their home universities. Courses stress critical thinking and writing. In addition to the concentrations listed below, IES students can enroll in Dutch language courses. Most courses are worth 5 credits.

Pre-Law Certification
Students enroll in two, 5-credit University of Amsterdam Law-related courses and in the required IES co-sponsored seminar course for a total of 15 creidts and a UcA-endorsed Pre-Law Certification.

Types of Accommodation 

Student Apartments/Residences- Housing contributes greatly to the quality of the overall study abroad and cultural experience, and the process of adapting to Dutch accommodations allows IES students to gain a greater understanding of, and insight into, Dutch culture. IES locates housing in apartments or student residences. All accommodations are screened and approved by the IES Amsterdam staff. Students are responsible for their own meals, which they can cook on their own or go to small, inexpensive restaurants and cafes located near their housing.

Independent Housing - Students who have family or friends in Amsterdam may wish to stay with them. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and cannot accept responsibility for other arrangements. Moreover, independently arranged housing is difficult to find due to the housing availability and housing agreements in Amsterdam. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.

Program Costs and Financial Aid Transfer 

IES tuition ($10,860 for Spring 2008 semester), plus IES room and board costs ($3,495 for Spring 2008 semester), and IES health insurance ($170 for Spring 2008 semester).

The following forms of aid may transfer: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal PLUS Loans, IL Monetary Award Program Grant (MAP), Alternative Loans, IES scholarships and need-based grants (for which students must apply).

For Summer Programs:

Students pay IES tuition. Room and board, health insurance, airfare and other miscellaneous expenses are not included in the tuition. Check with a study abroad advisor and a financial aid advisor for information about financial aid transfer.
