Program Type - This charming Provencal town is famous for its beautiful architecture including its Roman theater and arena, its 2000 year history, and its association with Van Gogh, Gaugin, Cezanne, and Picasso. In cooperation with Northwestern University, the IES Arles program offers two distinct academic programs. Students with a minimum of one year of university level French have the opportunity to take an intensive 7-credit French course that covers an entire year of university level French over the course of six weeks.
Third- and fourth-year level students will choose from a menu of interdisciplinary courses taught in French in art history, French language, cultural/Francophone studies, and theater. Cultural excursions throughout Provence will be an integral part of the program.
Orientation
After arriving in Arles, you will participate in an orientation program that introduces you to Arles, the IES program, and student life in the city. During the first few days, you will settle into your housing, take care of formalities, receive briefings on safety and security, and tour Arles and the surrounding area.
The IES Arles program provides housing in a charming family run hotel (double-occupancy) in the center of Arles. Students in the hotel receive breakfast daily and take their evening meals at inexpensive local restaurants.
IES provides four lunches every week at several different local restaurants so that you can immerse yourself in local culture and further your language development. Students in the intensive language program are required to attend, and all other students are strongly encouraged to participate in the lunches. These meals provide you the opportunity to practice French in the presence of IES professors and to sample the local cuisine. Students will receive a small stipend to help defray costs of evening meals.
